On my hunt for a project car, the Porsche 914 has peaked my interest. For many reasons. In general, it ticks off all of the boxes that I look for in a project car.
What does Oppo think of these?
I'd like to have one, Parts are easy to find and there is a wide array of cool things to do to them. I've heard them being called the "Ugly duckling" or "Not a real Porsche." But I actually quite like them. I'd have mine black, with the black and chrome wheels.
Any owners out there?

Love them, the simplicity and the looks are what get me. I think it's a decent enough project since they seem pretty easy to work on.

Yeah, under $5,000 would be a snag for me. Hopefully not going up in the next 6 months it'll take to find the perfect one.

Since it's basically a Beetle, it should be pretty damn easy to work on. Parts availability seems pretty good also.

Dammit, Hopefully I'll still be able to scoop up a running condition one for under that.

it doesn't help that it made the 2014 Jalopnik list of cars most likely to go up in value...

Have you seen the episode of wheeler dealers where they restore one?

Yeah, where they found mouse shit/nest or something in it? And then sell it back to the original owner right?

Yeah that's the one, seemed pretty simple mechanically when they were working on it. There was even an obscure part that needed replacement (something to do with cooling) and they were able to swap it with a part from a beetle.

I can't imagine there is a funnier car on the market for auto crossing and uniqueness. Or just fun winding roads

Believe me, I looked at the 240Z and the other Zs for a while. All of them had extreme rust issues, from floor pans to the body itself.

And the Beetle was one of the most mass produced cars of the time, which gives me even more good vibes about it.

Same, I can't really think of anything else that's quite like it. I've heard they handle pretty damn great because mid engined also.

Yeah, if you live in an area prone to rust, you're out of luck when it comes to the Z cars, it's their Achilles Heel.
Not sure if the 914 is much more resilient to rust issues though.

I can imagine. The only thing that would worry me is reliability but that's a small price to pay for handling excellence

Yup definitely seems like a good project on the surface of it. Make sure you buy one that's rot free though, that might be pretty difficult...

Hell yeah, I think they're cool. The looks are love them or hate them, and I quite like them. They aren't the fastest things out there, but they're pretty agile so I imagine they're pretty fun to drive. You might as well pick one up while you can snag one for pretty cheap, because decent ones are getting more expensive.

The seats suck. The engine is a pain in the ass to work on compared to cars of a similar vintage. I've never seen a car with a beetle motor make it up my subdivision. They are prone to rust on the door sills and rockers. They don't handle all that well; they kind of lurch about.
Unless it was the buy of a lifetime; personally, I'd pass.

I'm a 911 guy to the core, but I have to say I've always really wanted a 914. If you can find a good one before the air-cooled bubble gets too big I'd definitely go for it.

It seems like the 914s are less rusty in my area than the Z cars, I'm not sure why exactly.

Yeah, I'd still love to find a Z as rust free as possible, There are many more resources here on Oppo such as yourself compared to the 914. I'll be sure to let you know if I manage to find a relatively rust free Z car!

You need to make friends with some good used car dealerships. I lived across the street from one for a few years and he had access to all sorts of cheap car transportation, and if there was an open spot on a car carrier, would fill it for not much at all.

Yeah, connections with that kind of person never hurts. I'm connected alright, But it wouldn't hurt to poke around a bit more with the used dealer crowd.

I've owned two of them. In stock form they're pretty terrible cars. An '84 Civic will outhandle, outbrake and out accelerate 'em. But with a few grand of bolt-on parts (torsion bars, short shift kit, turbo tie rods, 911 front suspension, stiffer rear springs, a deep sump kit, Fuchs alloys w/205s in back) they're incredible. Totally gutless, even with a modded 2.0, but there's plenty of room for power in back. There's also factory holes for a 4pt harness bar behind the seats, and if you remove the stock cushion you have an instant race bucket that will allow you to handle as many G's as the car is capable of.
