I love having a small diesel engine.

Driving with absolutely no care for economy apart from slowing down with engine braking mostly I've averaged 54mpg over 100miles. That's including some B road thrashing and lots of stop start traffic. A god send when fuel is over £1.30 ($2.20).

So our diesel is pretty much double what you pay... You see why we all drive small diesel hatches.

$3.88 here in Lakewood, WA. Can't say the same for regular at $3.65, though it's less painful (in a financial sense) to ride my bike every day, at least.

It's not that hard to earn 50 MPGs on an engine but some methods might be a bit sketchy - such as shutting off the engine at stops that are longer than 30 seconds.

I just filled up on premium diesel for $3.99/gal. I can get regular diesel at $3.75 ish which is about what premium is going for in Phoenix, AZ.

Only thing better than a small diesel is a biturbo diesel. I get better gas mileage in my 335d than I do my Abarth, but the 335d will do 0-60 in 6s.

I was getting 60mpg 50/50 town and motorway in the first 50/60 miles then the rest was has been town and B roads which brought it down to 53/54 ish. If it was only motorway miles I have no doubt it'd get 65/70 and I can probably get 60 around town if I tried. I'm not really much of a hypermiler though, especially wouldn't go to stopping and starting the car at red lights and stuff like that.

You have different diesels too? I'm used to a choice of green pump (95 octane RON, it's different to the measurement in the US) or black pump (diesel) and that's it.

I got 70 on a 1.6 Focus on a long run without trying so you should get more.

Yeah I have no doubt pure motorway it'd hit 70. It probably needs a little maintenance to get better mileage though, most diesels get build up in the intake manifold so I'll be checking that out soon.

1 imperial gallon = 1.20094992550 US liquid gallon, so it's actually even cheaper than that. If my math* is correct:

$3.45 / US gallon = $2.87 / imperial gallon.

$4.45 / US gallon = $3.70 / imperial gallon.

£1.30 / imperial gallon = £1.56 / US gallon.

*No, I'm not American. Canadians also say "math" instead of "maths".

It's £1.30 a litre and by changing my calculation our price is $8.40 per US gallon roughly so yeah around double.

I just tried converting my local 129.9 cents per litre into GBP/ imp. gal. I give up.

They're getting better year by year, we'll have normal cars that consistently get 100mpg before long. My car is pretty low tech by todays standards so it'll probably be outdone by most modern diesels.

I found a station in a ritzy part of town that sells "premium diesel". Normally there is only one choice, but neither give a cetane rating.
