For her 40th birthday, my mom wants a new car, specifically a new SUV/Crossover. We've looked at very little so far, she likes the Honda Crosstour and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! the most so far, she also liked the CR-V but hated the shifter placement.

I advised against the Crosstour and said for her to just get an accord, but she hasn't looked at it yet.

What do you guys think is a good crossover? We are going from a Honda Civic (which may or may not be my 2nd car depending on the circumstances), this is my mom's first SUV/Crossover, and I will be driving it a lot, so preferably something that quick and handles like a car, not a boat.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The only crossover I've ever driven is the CRV, and I was impressed.

Price range is about $42500

If you're looking at Fords I'd say skip the Edge and go straight to the Explorer sport.

honestly I kinda liked it. It did handle like mud but I expected it because its an SUV. One thing that was impressive was how smooth it was, probably more smooth than any car I can remember being in.

I LOVE the explorer sport, but it's too big for my mom, and ontop of that its a whole $5000 more than the edge for really a size upgrade. I'm an only child, and my was single until recently, so we don't need something huge.

I personally like the GMC Terrain Denali.

Kinja'd!!!

Loaded with AWD and the 301 horsepower V6 it's right around $40,000. Or you can get an SLT-2 and get a similar level of luxury without the Denali price increase.

There's also the Equinox, but that looks like a bug IMO.

She goes to the city alot, and she already thinks an SUV is big enough, the grand cherokee is larger than my grandpas 7 seater CX9. Also looking at pricing, its very expensive, nearly out of our price range on the base model at $39,995.

its a very nice car, but starting at $50,000 in Canada is alot. My mom might stretch the budget, but not for a base model, sadly. Also my uncle (her brother) has had constant problems with our local toyota/lexus dealer and my family will probably never buy another toyota again because of the problems.

Subaru Crosstrek. In my (highly biased) opinion the best small crossover out there.

Really does drive like a car (because it's essentially an Impreza underneath), and the asymmetrical AWD can pretty much take the vehicle anywhere you want to go. I pull down around 30MPG in a 50/50 split of highway to city.

The car has a CVT, but it seems to be a well programmed CVT, that isn't annoying and doesn't drone like most. Plus, it has flappy paddles which make a world of difference in passing situations. Plus, you can get a loaded to the gills one for about 30k, and she can keep the rest of that money in her pocket, not wasting on a car payment.

We looked at the rogue, she didn't really like it. We might be going to subaru to check out the crosstek and forester. CX-5 is a car we've looked at for a while, and is a likely candidate. Might be a bit too small for my moms taste though, she wants a little more medium, like the CX-7

Your post made me wonder why someone would want a Crossover over a sedan right now, given that they're so popular, so I did some sleuthing on the statistical 'advantages' of an SUV over a sedan.

Below is a bunch of stats comparing an equivalent Edge, Fusion, and Focus. I'm going to give you the TL;DR reasoning below, but I'll just give you the stats here, using a 3.5l Edge as a basis of 1, with higher % meaning better values, and lower % meaning worse.

Gas prices were assumed for 20000 mile a year, lease prices for a 36 month lease.

Edge 3.5l AWD:

Cargo w/4 passengers: 32 cubic Feet ( 100% )

Cargo w/2 passengers: 68 cubic feet ( 100% )

Cost of lease+fuel yearly: $9642/year ( 100% )

0-60: 6.9 ( 100% )

USNews Safety Rating: 8.9 ( 100% )

Fusion 2.0l Ecoboost AWD:

Cargo w/4 passengers: 16 cubic Feet ( 50% )

Cargo w/2 passengers: 52 cubic feet ( 77% )

Cost of lease+fuel yearly: $7584/year ( 127% )

0-60: 6.8 ( 101% )

USNews Safety Rating: 9.2 ( 103% )

Focus Titanium 2.0l:

Cargo w/4 passengers: 23.8 cubic Feet ( 74% )

Cargo w/2 passengers: 44.8 cubic feet ( 66% )

Cost of lease+fuel yearly: $6798/year ( 142% )

0-60: 8.5 ( 81% )

USNews Safety Rating: 9 ( 101% )

Some insights:

1. The Edge is less safe than the Fusion its based off of due to poor frontal crash test ratings.

2. The cost of owning an Edge is significantly higher than either the Fusion or the Edge.

3. The only area where the Edge has a consistent advantage is in cargo space, and that only shines if you have 4 passengers.

4. The 3.5l V6 Edge is slower than the 2.0l Ecoboost Fusion.

So, if she buys an Edge over a Fusion (which is it's platform-sister sedan), it's her admitting that she cares about cargo space about 3x more than money, safety, or speed.

Cargo stats came from Ford's Website, along with 0-60. Lease information came from TrueCar.

Below is the rest of the stats that create the values above.

Fuel Economy: Let's assume you're going to get an equivalent trim with the Fusion or Focus, which means you're getting the Ecoboost 240HP AWD Inline 4 in the fusion, and the Focus with 2.0l Titanium model with an automatic transmission, and the Edge Limited with the 3.5l V6 AWD,

Edge Fuel Economy: 18/25

Fusion Fuel Economy: 22/31

Focus Fuel Economy: 27/37

But that doesn't tell the whole story, let's assume $4 a gallon for gas, how does the cost stack up for 20,000 miles of driving (12 months)?

Edge: $4444/$3200 average: $3822

Fusion: $3636/$2580 average: $3108

Focus: $2962/$2162 average: $2562

Lease Prices:

Edge: $485/mo or $5820/year

Fusion: $373/mo or $4476/year

Focus: $353/mo $4236/year

Add in fuel economy and you get:

Edge: $9642/year

Fusion: $7584/year

Focus: $6798/year

We have had our CX-5 for a little over a year and my wife and I love it. If you have any questions, I can answer them. It's very nimble, well put together, easy to live with, and gets great gas mileage. The highest we have seen is 37 MPG on a highway trip to see my family last Christmas.

The Mazda CX-5 is the best driving crossover out there. It's actually more fun to drive than a lot of cars thanks to its great steering and handling. It really handles well, nearly as well as the new Mazda 3. The automatic transmission is also the best programmed auto I've ever driven, it's very smooth and downshifts quickly. When a drove a manual 3 with the 2.0 engine I was surprised to learn it felt gutless below 2000rpm, because the automatic in the 2.0L CX-5 I had driven did such a good job of hiding that gutlessness. The CX-5 is a little short of the CR-V on space and not as quiet or refined as a Crosstour or Edge, so it might not work.

The Crosstour has a really comfortable back seat, but unless that's really important a Subaru Outback would be a better choice. The Subaru Forester is another car you have to consider. The CX-5 is much better to drive, but the Forester has more space and I hear the Turbo version can be pretty entertaining. The Outback also has an excellent flat-6, which is probably the most refined engine in a mainstream car. You can probably get a great price on the still very competitive 2014 or get the nicer looking 2015 with a much fancier interior and up to date infotainment stuff.

The Volvo XC60 is at the top end of the price range, so I'd recommend looking at used ones 1-2 years old. I love the styling of the XC60, especially the interior. It isn't the most fun car to drive, but the combination of a really smooth ride and the best seats in the world make it my second favorite crossover (behind the CX-5, which I love because it's so fun to drive). Either inline 6 option is great. The 3.2 is probably one of the most refined engines on the market and feels quick enough. The T6 is just as refined as the 3.2, but does sub 6 second 0-60 runs. Either one will get about 19mpg, which is the XC60's biggest problem.
