so, the mazda3 we just bought (2009 BL model aka. smiley face) just caught some sort of wierd bug tonight. I just changed the oil, and took it for a drive. No dramas. Started it again at night, and front lights, high beams, fog lights, rear lights, and the illumination around the radio/HVAC controls aren't working. Brake lights, blinkers and all other interior lights work. The car still drives.

Fuses, relays, maybe water on something electrical if you've had heavy rain. Start with that.

forgot to add checked all fuses, dont have the multimeter on me, so unable to do that
