As someone who will have their license in 6 months...what do you drive, what do you pay, are you on your parent's insurance, and what ripoff c.o. do you give money to?

1985 Corvette, insured for $6,000 for 6,000 miles/year. I set up a plan with Hagerty with my father's info and I pay him for it, half what I'd pay had it been under my name. It's $166/year. That includes roadside assistance and 10 miles of free towing, and stuff I don't care about like their magazine. It's a pretty nice deal!

You get on your parent's insurance, get a >$12k car and her liability insurance only. You will still pay a ton and you won't get anything but higher premiums after you wreck your first car. The good news is that one you turn 25 your insurance gets much cheaper.

Is it possible to arrange having the car in your name while the insurance in your parent's name...because I feel if I pay for the car it should be legally mine...hoping I can get my parent's rate though.
That seems like a good deal.

2004 Dodge Neon. No collision/comprehensive. It's on my parents plan. It's my "reliable" DD. My parents pay in the ballpark of the high $600 every 6 months. State Farm
2005 Dodge Magnum RT. $5000 comprehensive, no collision. $642 every 6 months, my own policy. Progressive
I have a very hard time recommending State Farm after some of the things my parents agent has said and done with the policies (and my parents aren't happy either, and are eventually looking to switch). I went with Progressive for myself because I got an affordable quote for the car I wanted to have. I haven't had a bad experience with them. When I call them, things get taken care of. They're marketing scheme certainly paid off. I don't use snapshot or any other things like that, but I have no problems. Long term, I may switch, but as of right now, I'm happy with them, and have no immediate reason to change. I may change my coverage when I renew, but I'm not 100% sure. Only time and a conversation with an agent will be able to tell.

I don't think so, but I'm not totally sure. They check the title which would probably mean checking the owner, but if you're a minor you can't register the car under your name anyways.

if you're under 18 you can't have a car in your name I believe. Insure it under your parents with you as a driver. That's just common sense, it's incredibly cheaper.

What the hell is common sense?
Then I don't like the idea of pretty much buying my parents a car.

Common sense is something we don't have on Oppo :)
I felt just like you did. I saw the quotes I was getting on my E90, and then I changed my mind. With the money I save by insuring it as them, I can save up to buy another car. Something that starts with an M and is followed by a number :)

The free online quote is a great thing. Like I was told, use your real information when you do it. It's just a quote, and you can play around and set whatever you want, and go from there. No reason to not get a quote. With insurance companies, they'll sometimes do plenty to get a new customer. I know that All State changed it's whole bit in NJ, not sure about other states. They're trying to be very competitive lately. I only know that because I recently did some work in an office, and had to hear the same spiel over and over about it. I'm not in any position to change things right now, but in a year or so, I could get an estimate, there's nothing to lose doing so.

My only concern is when I leave for college...I want to make sure I can take the car even if they don't want me to (save it for my brother even though I paid for it or some shit like that)

Oh, I guess it varies on a state-by-state basis then. All I know is that the savings were significant enough (75%, actually) to legally be driving someone else's car that I paid for!

You're not buying your parents a car. Go to progressive, and get a policy under your parent's name and add yourself as a driver. If you get a policy under your name with just yourself as a driver, you'll pay double or more.

Most colleges don't even give freshmen parking on campus if they live in a dorm. My brother is gonna be a college freshmen this August and he's a little mad about not getting to keep his Bimmer. Coincidentally my sister just got her license haha.
My advice: buy a manual. If your brother can't drive it they won't make you leave it. And if you paid for it, just take it. Sure, it's in your parents name but YOU paid for it. I made it a point to buy my own car so my parents couldn't pull any shit like that when I first started driving.

I see. Maybe you should take it up with the insurance company, then; don't give your info, though. Hypotheticals are the key here.

Well, I'm no longer an American as far as that stuff goes, but I was paying about $150/mo I think on a 2000 BMW 323i (badged, not in truth, it had a 240hp inline six underneath the hood, I think that's an M3 engine, it was placed there by the previous owner in conjunction with the dealership, long story according to the dealership, but it was still certified pre-owned). I was in my mid-twenties, and I didn't have the greatest record.
I imagine I'd pay a lot less now than I did then. I'm a woman, I'm thirty years old, and I haven't been pulled over at all, let alone accident or ticket, in about seven years.
ETA: Oh, I had Progressive.

See you and I think rationally, but my mom thinks everything is hers and a manual won't stop her. But Wisconsin allows you to title your car as "x or y" so that would allow me if nothing else on my 18th birthday to sell it to myself if they tried anything funny. I have already said I'd get a job and if needed borrow from my loaded grandparents if I needed to finance.

You did, but your apology is accepted.
Unfortunately, it's something out there in our slang. And even as a woman, and even as someone who has been sexually assaulted myself, I've even said it in the past (although certainly not in the last few years). I'm not going to rake you over the coals for it.

I had Progressive when I was in America. I also had a good experience with them. I had State Farm before that and they dropped me like a rock after my first teen accident. My parents still use them, but I got my own insurance, and I ended up paying less than my parents had been paying for me.

...in what state? Maybe the law has changed, but at 16, I definitely owned my own car. My name was on the title. It was also my $10K, not my parents, that paid for it.
JGrabowMSt

The two cars are in totally different insurance brackets, but you're absolutely right, having your own policy will always be cheaper than when your parents have the policy. That and crossing the 25 year old threshold is something to look forward to. Two more years for me, and that $642 will go down a bit more hopefully.

Haha my parents sound the same. When's your birthday? If you turn 18 before you go to college (pretty much everyone does) just title it in your name and do whatever you want. Insurance will hike so save some extra money.
Another option, just sell your car right before you go to college (you won't really need it as a freshmen living on campus) and keep saving. After you finish freshmen year (try to have a job during the year) you should have some money saved up. Buy something nice for yourself, borrow from grandma if you have to.

Yeah I saw a substantial drop at 25. Now as a 30 year old woman with a clean driving record in not one but two countries, I imagine my insurance would be a pittance, honestly. In Japan liability insurance comes with shaken , so I have not decided yet whether or not I'm going to add more.

I don't intend on staying near home, I love my parents but hate the city in which I live.
(They don't like it much either but they are staying until retirement as they have good jobs)
Part of my leaving for good ceremony will be doing a small burnout on the on ramp leaving for college. My birthday is in February (18 in 2017). I have no rational reason for a car my freshman year of college, I just want the feeling of freedom and independence only a car can provide

I worded that wrong, you can title it in your name but a parent has to sign with them on all insurance documents. This is in VA.

Ah, I was in Texas. I don't recall having to involve my parents to get insurance after State Farm dropped me, but maybe I was over 18 at the point. I went to college at 17 though. I did high school in three years.

My cousin in Texas is doing high school in 3 years. The laws are much more lax in Texas according to her, but she has USAA so I believe my aunt still had to sign off because she's the retired veteran. I also used USAA here in VA.

I had USAA briefly (my own account, I was Navy), but that was a lot later, and they screwed me over. I went back to Progressive. I'm one of those few people with an absolutely terrible experience with them.
Navy Federal > USAA.

Luckily I haven't had to make a claim yet so I can't say too much about USAA but my rates are really good, way better than what state farm quoted me.
I haven't heard anything negative about Navy Federal from anyone. They must be good.
Kat Callahan

07/27/2014 at 01:10 | 0 |
State Farm is crap. USAA is great as long as you don't screw up, and my screw up was related to some payment issues because of unemployment, not even a driving issue.
They were absolutely unforgiving, inflexible, and downright mean . I had one customer service representative tell me, "Oh, one way or another we will get our money out of you." ...and I was on the phone trying to come to some kind of negotiation. It was just shocking. They lost a customer for life, but they didn't seem to care. Turns out my financial issues were only a few months, but they've earned my enmity forever.

My parents will be paying $250 a month for me as a new driver on their plan. I'll be driving a Nissan Juke NISMO, but since the car will be in my mom's name, i'l lbe the "guest driver" of it, hence the low price. note to you: E36 M3's cost A LOT to insure per year. like, more than the car will cost you A LOT. It depends on the coverage you choose to get. Talk to your parents.
When I first got my license I was on my parents insurance, I think that's always the best idea. I drove a shitbox but I come from a family of lawyers— so I got zero collision insurance, but got the maxmum coverage on uninsured motorist and the maximum coverage for liability.
However unlikely it may be, what if you kill someone? Then your parents need to sell the house to pay. What if some jackass drunk driver with no assets and no insurance hits you and injures you for life? You won't get a dime and you are on the hook for a lot of bills, even with health insurance. Sometimes it's worth it to go above the bare minimum, which I could have gotten for $150/month or something. It ended up being more like $300-400 a month. This is in CT by the way.

Yup, that's a good default rule, it's exactly what I did. My buddy was on his own insurance from day one and did the bare minimum, which was like $20k/$40k uninsured/liability, at first. He saved some money and never got in an accident, but if he had hurt someone it would have been BIG trouble. Always gotta think of the worst case scenario with insurance, because crazy shit happens.

24 with 2003 BMW 330i ZSP paying $426 every six months or about $71 a month through Progressive. That includes a $500 deductible, full coverage, and roadside assistance. The car is under my name. Before the BMW I had a Honda Accord since I was 15, registered under my parents name, and insurance was through them too. I was listed as an additional driver. Much cheaper that way until you build a few years of driving experience under the insurance company's eyes.
