I bought a new laptop for college. A new Retina display 13" MacBook Pro. 128GB flash, upgraded it to 8gb of RAM (over base 4gb), i5, 2.4 Ghz with automatic over clocking to 2.9. It retails for $1500 but I saved the $200 by using a student discount. Strangely the refurbished and new priciest were practically the same. My goal is to get this to last through 4 years of college and hopefully a bit longer. Now I feel poor.
Note: prices I have are with the approx $100 of tax. I also got a $100 Apple Store gift card with the deal because of the education discount.

My laptop lasted 1 year of high school and 3 years of college, and I am terrible at taking care of them. . . you should be fine.

My friend just bought one of these. A bit underpowered for gaming but the screen is beauteous.

Once I picked up my 15 inch Retina, I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to go back. So beautiful!

My 17" is now 4 years old, very little desire to swap out to anything, even to a 15" rMBP. 17s were just something else, and they really were mobile tanks.
The space is a little light for me (but I have too much shit so theres that) otherwise, its a fine laptop that'll last a while and is more or less priced in line with a vast majority of the ultrabooks out there.

Still, bajeesus I splurged on the wife's laptop: 15'' Samsung, Win 8.1, 1TB HDD+256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 2GB discrete Radeon and i7 (can't remember which one) for $1000

But doesn't everyone here make $98,000 a year just from sitting at home? Anyway $1500 is way too much for those specs. I just got a new 14 inch Lenovo with an i7, 500gig hhd + 8gig ssd, r9 275m, and 8 gigs of ram for $800.

Should have spent $500 on laptop and then would have had $800 to spend on car stuff

Yeah but I wanted something that will last... Think of it as a new tool full of automotive knowledge.

What's your major? I hope to god you are not going to run CAD on that thing, the small screen will drive you crazy.

put an SSD in it, it breathes a whole new life into it. honestly. it still amazes me that my ssd in my old fat 13" boots up faster than my new 15" retina

Apple quality Is the best, Ive had my Mid 2010 13"MBP since a week after the model debuted. Its almost 5 years old, Never needed serious repair (just a battery) and is still going strong. You shouldnt have a problem with that computer lasting you PAST college

ME. I should be fine. I've got access to plenty of desktops and can always dock the laptop to a screen
