"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

Didn't think I still had a picture, though I looked. When I was 14, I saw this car for sale by the side of country road. It's a 1972 Mercedes 250C. It had a big dent in the right rear fender, but was otherwise in good shape outside. The dash had a few cracks, but the interior looked good too. The car ran and drove well, and the guy told me I could have it for $2000. I got my dad's permission, and, through some unbelievable stroke of luck, my mom's as well. And for some reason, even though I could just afford it, I didn't buy it. Basically, my grandparents said, "You can buy that car now, or you can wait and we will pay for a nicer one." I wanted that car so badly, but I knew I wasn't mechanically savvy enough to give it the attention it deserved.
Even though I ended up with a "nicer" car, I still think about the old Benz once and a while. And now I found the picture. That isn't helping.

I have never heard of this Mercedes before. Where they top tier in the lineup at the time or more mid level like an E class?

It was the C-Class. The W108 was the E-Class of the time, seen here in stunning convertible form:
and this, of course, was the S-Class:

Doesn't get much more luxurious or prestigious than a full Mercedes lineup. Personally I would take the W108

Uh, I think you got that wrong. The 280SE Coupe and Convertible were considered in the "S" class of automobiles in Benz's lineup in the 60s and 70s. The W-100 600 Grosser series were essentially custom built and way beyond their production lineup of cars, including the W108/W109 series

Okay gotcha. So was the 250C like an E-Class?

These type of Mercedes designs are impeccably classy.

There wasn’t really one, the earliest direct C-class precursor was the W201, affectionately called the baby benz for that reason, and that was introduced in 1982.

Indeed. I don’t even mind the bumper arrangement.

I didn’t even notice it, it’s not as bad as some others like the ones on 911s at the time.

Still for sale? For real?? Amazing
imo get it if there’s any way possible. My wisest relative — aunt — was advising me before and said, “You usually have a lot more regrets about things you didn’t do, than things you did.” Go for it!

Just to further show the car is a great price.
