I think the reason why Sonics, FoSTs, 500 Abbys, etc are so popular at car shows is because they're something the every day consumer could buy and modify. Oh you have a first gen corvette with 13 original miles on it your great grandfather bought? That's nice. Oh look you got successful off a startup tech company helping people organize their iTunes music so you bought an Aventador? Cooool. Wait so work IT at some insurance company and have a FoST but is has COBB level 2 kit?! Tell me more.

I caught a glimpse of one in a parking lot today. Orange. Nearly needed new pants. You certainly don't see these every day.

Because you don't have to be afraid to stand near it. Certain cars I dont even want to breathe on.

After seeing several 914s recently at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix car show, I've found that I quite like them. It's now part of my cars-to-get-some-day list.

it's because your car has an "above average" quality to it- but people don't have to be afraid of it. It's not an original cobra that's going to go for 2.9 million on some auction block and NEVER see tarmac or hell, will probably never even move under its own power again. Really users cars will have thousands and thousand of miles of enjoyment and fun. Sure its not worth a bajillion bucks but it means something.

I've only seen one in real life. It had been left at the dealership I worked at after it broke down. It was rusted to hell, and obviously unreliable, but there was part of me that wanted it soooo bad.

I heartily agree with this.

I can't even imagine not driving and enjoying my car. I wouldn't want a trailer queen.

My Dad had a customer(he was a UPS driver) offer to sell him one(flat 4) for $2500 about 5 years ago, he didn't. He did buy a BRAT for $275 though. It was gonna be $350, but it didn't start when we went to see it, so the seller lowered the price to $275. After 15 minutes of fiddling with it after we got it home it was running like a top.

Sorry, you can't have the Sonic.
Seriously, that 914 was damn clean. I've only seen a handful, but it looks like it had just left the showroom

True. I think it's also a little bit of the unexpected. It's a car show mostly full of classics and modern American sports cars, so a little hatchback is different. That draws people's eyes, then they see the big polished intake and take a closer look, and suddenly they see it's actually a cool little car.
In general I think these compact sporty hatchbacks all exude a ton of character which makes them appealing in a different way than a classic muscle car does.

Burner accounts get to have long names? So not fair. Also mods, while you're at it, this guy needs authorship.

I love how the MR2 is sitting there like "yeah, I'll pop my frunk. Look, ma! No engine!"
