I shared a reply earlier because I wanted to share a few of these photos but didn't feel like making a new post...it disappeared an hour later? Why?

The moderators don't seem to like it. They say it clutters Oppo.

I disagree with their approach as I find it a great avenue to conversations that you might have missed.

Technically anyone who is an author (and there are 2300+ authors here) can unshare a comment from the mainpage of Oppo. This tool is not limited to only moderators.

My stance on it is as follows:

Does the comment as it will appear on Oppo (e.g. the first paragraph) stand alone, on its own, as a post, which will lead people to want to read more or is self-evident as to why it was shared without any additional context? If it doesn't meet this, I tend to look negatively at the share, because essentially, it is just noise.

I have unshared many comments because they don't meet this standard. Expect much more discussion on this in the VERY near future.

Because clutter. No one needs to share their own comments if they're good someone else will.

I dont like how shared comments get deleted with complete disregard for their content. Sharing comments Is a good way to Post things without redundancy.

I would suggest that you create a new post around that comment and add your thoughts/insights to it. I'm with Gamecat on this one.

/not a mod

Except it's not about that at all. You can create a new post, so I can clutter it up all I want that way...

Theres no need to duplicate something if it already exists.

So an image I took, of a car I own, is noise? It doesn't meet some un-written made up standard? That's kind of sucky to someone who tries to contribute positively to this community.

We have a group of folks who seem to rampantly unshare things. Unfortunately the act of doing so is anonymous (for now). I was letting you know what my personal standard is for unsharing comments. I think it's a valid approach.

(Why do I think it's valid? Because if you feel proud of your content, I think you should create a post about it)

While we are on the subject. I'm looking for feedback for my post on my personal blog. It's about to go live, but I'm working on a couple of related edits for the revised handbook as well. If you have a few minutes, they are up on gamecat235.kinja.com

For instance, the share you just made, of this comment, is rather self serving since the very same post which you are commenting on covers this exact topic.

(for the record I haven't removed, and won't remove the share, but I would expect that someone will, probably for the reason I just cited, and many people here feel that sharing a comment of your own is a bad thing - which I don't agree with).

The share I just did was totally self serving. The first wasn't.

Clear rules, or removing the option to share would make this easy. The, 'we kinda don't like it' approach sucks.

No, but sharing this comment is. I don't know who unshared the other comment - I saw that one too but chose to leave it as it had merit by itself, see Gamecats thoughts on shared comments - but I did this one.

Though i think the sgare comment feature is much overused, some things are OK, as your earlier share was. Unfortunately some people unshare everything and that's not right either. It's a difficult thing to balance when these features are open and available to everyone and it will have to be discussed further to figure out the right way to use it and not use the unsharing feature.

While your idea to create a separate post about it would work, it would create systemic redundancy. And redundancy is not something that should be necessary.

I want to at least unmuck the rules, since I do not believe that the option will go anywhere anytime soon. Which is why I would like more feedback on the post on my personal blog before I post it here.

Redundancy is often the only path to a more reliable and functioning system. We are making due with what we have.

My motto is: Redundancy is ALWAYS unnecessary

Kinja'd!!!2

Yes, that was the point. Just trying to show it is a screwed up situation. Clear rules or better yet a tool that only does what the admins want, or at least a notification that anyone can unshare would be helpful.

It's annoying to do something because you wanted to post it here, and have it deleted by someone.

The problem Isnt whether The reader cares about redundancy, rather that the author cares. I know I dont want redundancy in my posts, and have/would do the same thing that bird did

Good, because I'm still unhappy that MitsubiShe's comment was unshared. Her insight as a woman who works in the car industry and owns an Evo was rather invaluable, and my original article had long fallen off the first page.

I understand unsharing silly shares, but I do honestly wish there was a moderator/admin function to Kinja to track who unshares so we know who is abusing their authorship privileges.

I kind of hate this nonsense. I have unshared 2 replies,. 1 was NSFW and the other was just shit stirring. As for people unsharing useful, insightful or interesting things, it just doesn't make sense to me.
