!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is the sort of thing you might want to look at. It's a 4 seat, manual sports coupe that will allow you to drift and hoon to you heart's content, but unlike the mustang/3-series/whatever else, it will actually move in the winter because it has AWD. Which is what winter cars have. And yes, you can do plenty of snow drifting in a Quattro.

Because he needs TWO unreliable German cars.

He's looking at a BMW 318 compact. This is just the slightly less-slow AWD version of that.

I think it runs, but needs some mechanical work.

The pre-VANOS 318s are super reliable!
I had an '84. Dat engine refused to die. Hundreds of thousands of miles with no rebuild

I'm still saying a Blazer is his best bet.

I'm not up to date on when the engine I had stopped being used
I think maybe some of the earlier E36 318 compacts had that basic SOHC non-VANOS engine? Not sure...

What's with all the hate towards RWD in snow? It's my preferred method as long as you have the correct tires. Tires make all the difference.

Or the mighty YJ with the bulletproof 4 cylinder/5-speed https://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/451340…
And it's actually WAY shorter than the FoST.

I know it will work with snow tires. But you can have plenty of fun with AWD, and the fact is, it will get you through more snow more of the time.

But you can get a massive tank slapper in a RWD car. It's not the safest but whatever.

Looks like some of the early ones had the rather simple M42B18
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
That engine was used in later year E30 318i cars.
Not the same exact engine I had, but probably pretty similar. I don't think it had VANOS

I'm not saying AWD is 'unfun', I have a small amount of experience with AWD in snow also. But I also know that I have driven up an unplowed, closed due to snow, hill in my winter tire equipped GTO. Drove right around the "Road Closed" signs at the top of the hill, and I'm sure I turned some heads. Also, I trust my winter tired RWD car more than my "all-season" (no-season) tired AWD car, because I know it will turn and stop better.
AWD + winter tires... I agree that's more unstoppable. But also less fun unless you really seriously want to wail on it.

Forget safe. It will inevitably get stuck, eventually. Regardless of snow tires, that is a fact.
My dad's RWD GS300 had traction control and a set of massive Blizzaks, and it still got stuck sometimes.

I'm sure with really, really good tires, you can get a RWD further than you would think. We had a RWD, Blizzaks-equpped car in the family, and it was a blast. But we had just as much fun in the RWD-biased Quattro, which even on all-seasons would go places the RWD GS300 on snows wouldn't.

Yep, mine was just on Blizzaks also. It's a good example of how all-seasons are fairly garbage, relatively.
But, I guess to keep relevant to this CQ (which is a car that I rather adore), we should talk about it. I am impressed by how cheap this one appears on the surface. But it's been in a front end collision. The front end doesn't line up well, the grill doesn't have the quattro badge, and I would presume that the collision was the genesis for the rust forming on the fender. These cars have some of the best galvanizing (especially for the era) of any cars that I've seen. You have to practically give the rust a tax incentive before it will move in.
I would want this car once I had enough funds to make some expensive changes. The front end neads work, time for the updated 92-96 90 front end. The suspension is surly shot, as well as needing a brake overhaul. And then it needs an 01E paired with either a freshly built and breathed upon 2.2l 20vt, or a 3.6l or 4.2l V8.
This thing needs too much money to really be considered a 'cheap' alternative as-is.

I kinda wondered about that. It's a cool car, but at that price, and with that much "work needed" listed, I might hesitate a little. Plus front damage, like you said.
