I was just thinking this over, how much longer before we see some super-rich Russian, Chinese, or Middle Eastern car collector wanting that rare surviving Bullitt 1968 Mustang GT go as far as paying a few hundred thousand dollars to steal it from it's asshole owner in the Ohio River Valley? Or any other rare car like a 250 GTO that's rusting in some guy's lawn who won't part with it until he dies (and his pissed-off children sell it for 200$). We've seen people go batshit over the mundane things in life, what's stopping someone with power from going "fuck the rules" and going after something big?

This happens all of the time. Usually its because they're trying to steal the investment gains on the classic car from someone else. By making a controversy and bidding war over it now, it might improve the price later.

For example, once a 250 GTO sells for $27million, all of a sudden all similar Ferraris get the eye on them and start to go up in value in strange ways, 250 GTO or not. So by upbidding and blowing up one car out of spite, they can actually make significantly more money.

I've always wanted to steal cars from the sultan of Brunei. He wouldn't notice a few cars missing, right?

I would order a hit on the Sultan of Brunei just to get those poor cars out of his hands.

I'm not even sorry.

I meant more like outright owning the unicorn of all Mustangs. The owner is ass-tight enough to crush coal in diamonds given that he turned down Steve McQueen, Steve's son, and other multi-million dollar offers just to let his teenage son fix it using bondo and whatever weekly lessons he gets from high school auto shop class. Eventually some crazy Sultan will be like, "Turn down my offer? You shall wake up to find your precious Mustang missing before reappearing in my collection a few months later, outside of the country and outside of any means for you to get it back through legal actions. You might also find yourself or your son beheaded because fuck you."

That's quite the idea. Sadly(this is just a quick search of the dark net) most hitmen/women will not do a political figure or "leader."

Who is it that turned down this offer?

Some "mysterious" father owns the camera car Bullitt Mustang, he's had it since the studio got rid of it after filming since it was so trashed. He's rejected McQueen's cash offer for wanting the car back, McQueen's son, and just about any big-time collector who figured out the mystery and tracked down the owner to offer him a big fat check for it. According to rumors, he's letting his teenage son repair the car instead of letting a proper shop correctly restore it to the condition it truly deserves. I'm just saying that eventually someone from out of the US will figure it out and won't take no for an answer, even if it means hiring someone to steal (or kill) for that Mustang.

Those guys don't care about historic cars. They just want shiny gold-plated ego extensions.
