Not sure on the transmission, but it's likely to be a T-56 from a fourth gen camaro, as I bet the whole swap came out of one. The T-56 is a popular choice for 240Z swaps.

If I were doing it, I'd go with an LS2 and a stroke from a 4.3, to make a 332 to that could rev to the moon and back.

....then add twin turbos and methanol injection.

Nah, way too much power for a car that's not even 2000lbs... I want something drivable and still fun, not something that wants to spin out everytime I touch the pedal to accelerate out of a corner. Smashing the throttle to the floor out of corner is part of the fun. Barely being able to touch it... meh... useless :)

You'd be surprised at how much power that chassis can handle with meaty tires and a revised suspension.

However, in that case, it looks like you want a Rebello Racing motor. It's the stock L28 turned up to 11:

They make between 250 and 350 HP depending on what you want to pay for, all naturally aspirated, and in the highest trims are capable of 9000+ rpm.

Rhooooo yeah, that sounds like my thing :D

Damn, do I want a 240z... Most beautiful car ever created (yup, I said it)

This. I'd much rather a car like this to have between 200 and 300bhp max, perhaps less if I really want to push it.

350HP from a ~3.1l naturally aspirated 2v non-crossflow engine is insane. Even the best Honda S2000 engines only get 125 HP/liter, and they have 2 more valves, a higher redline (9900 rpm vs 9000rpm) and a crossflow head design. Rebello more than doubles the output without adding turbos. It would be like if someone took a chevy 350 and made it produce 700 HP without turbos or adding displacement. Except that isn't even quite comparable, since the 350 is also crossflow.

The real life "Devil Z" (pictured below) was actually a 280ZX and had the engine out of a 1981-1983 280ZX turbo, but outfitted with an LD28 crank, OS Giken DOHC head and twin turbos. The DOHC head alone fixes the non-crossflow pattern and gives it 2 extra valves. This raises redline to about 10000rpm and increases HP to around 300 (back then, a revised version nowadays gets you closer to 350). The turbos increased output somewhere in the mid-600s.

If you're going to build a top-speed Z anyway, the 280ZX is a better choice than the 240Z or 280Z, since it has a larger engine bay, much improved aerodynamics, a larger differential, a better choice of transmission options, and the best L engine already.
