Also drilled out a lot of the bottom of the airbox so there's a ton more air going in. The old filter was a piece of shit so now there's something good in there. The ST sounds even more awesome now plus that K&N sticker on the airbox has gotta add AT LEAST 25BHP!

Sure have been a lot of airboxlopnik posts lately. I can't really cut out the bottom of mine because there's a PCM there and you don't really want to put holes in that. Sad face. I might cut out the side facing the fender, though.

If your MAF sensor is a "hot-wire" type (which I think it is), then the oil from a K&N really plays havoc with it over time. Also, they don't filter very well...
Read this (or just skip to the chart labeled " Accumulative Gain ": http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html
Related: I've spent good chunk of my life in the dyno cells of a several major race engine builders (major, as in you've definitely heard of them) or in the paddock of one race team or another (professional racing has been a part of my family for decades) and I've never seen a real race car with a K&N. The professional engine builders don't trust them, and I like to defer to the experts on matters that I feel I am less educated on. Just so ya know.

I've heard of these comparisons, however I have these counter arguments...
1) I didn't pay for it.
2)The previous filter wasn't OEM, and was a piece of shit anyway.
3) Coupled with the larger intake areas with the increased airbox, I can state that there is definitely an increase in engine response and acceleration. It feels stronger. Not only that, I've finally realized 400mi to a tank of gas.
4) I'm 18 and am grateful for anything that improves my car, irrespective of what dyno readings say.

Right on... mostly... I edited my first post a little late, added this:

Hmmm, I didn't consider the MAF. I don't think mine is quite right anyways, so I'm not particularly fussed about doing damage to it. If anything, it's an incentive to replace it eventually ;) Even though I don't necessarily agree with the stuff you posted, I still appreciate your input.

If you want a good read (and you're bored), read this thread on BobIsTheOilGuy. Funny name for a forum, but chock-full of legit engineers and smart guys. Both opinions are pretty well discussed: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthre…
My opinion is based on race experience as well as a long discussion (over a bunch of beer) I had just last week with a group of engine calibrators and other engineers at work (I'm a powertrain engineer for one of the Big 3). Do some reading and see what you find!
And above all, enjoy that ST! I used to own a Ford Contour (think Mondeo with a trunk) with the 2.5 and LOVE these old Duratec engines!

I'm inclined to agree with Rock Bottom. I've seen cars with scored cylinders and excessive oil consumption after running k&n filters for a long time as well as MAF and oxygen sensor/mixture faults and rough idle conditions. Remember it doesn't matter how much air can get into your airbox if the computer can't adjust the fuel to match and if your throttle body has a small diameter thus making it a bottle-neck and negating any gains that may have been had from intake modifications. MAF's usually aren't cheap, so just because your k&n was free to obtain doesn't mean it will be free to own. In my experience, high quality paper filters are the best and won't hinder performance (high quality being the operative term here).
