Delta Posts Second Quarter Profit of $801 million

Delta Air Lines reported a second quarter profit of $801 million , or $0.94 cents per diluted share, up 16.9% year-over-year (YOY) from $685 million in the second quarter of 2013. The superb financial performance was driven by strong mainline growth in the domestic and Trans-Atlantic operating regions, as well as reduced fuel costs thanks to the substitution of more fuel efficient mainline Boeing 717s for regional jets (fuel efficiency per available seat mile [ASM] increased 1.2%) and lower fuel prices. Not that I know of, but we will get a nice profit sharing check on Feb 14! This quarter was about twice as good as the same quarter last year and last year was pretty darn good.

So, since the company is doing so well, ticket prices will be coming down, right? Right? Bueller?

The planes are full. Supply and demand. Plane tickets are still near an all time low when adjusted for inflation.

There are some good investments being made for the future. Lots being put into the passenger experience. New planes too. Company is also putting some away for when it gets rough again. And it will.

I believe everything you say. And when you consider the alternative—driving—flying is a great, especially when you can get across the country in a matter of hours. It's incredible, really. But when I want to fly my family of 5 somewhere, and it costs over $2000, it's hard to rationalize adjustments for inflation. I would love to fly, but I just can't afford five seats.

yeah, it all adds up. Taking the crew to the movies, dinner, Disney or what have you. We feel it too with our family. That said, I tend to be the type who prefers to spend on experiences rather than things. I will say I am grateful to be doing work I enjoy, at a good company and to have the benefit of seeing the world on top of that. Pretty amazing.

Amazing indeed. There's nothing quite like doing what you love. I'm doing what I love—I just wish it paid better!
