Love, love, love the E34 M5. Found this one in Ontario. Price seems reasonable. Especially since it's a Euro-Spec car (originally from France) which makes it even more rare. I'm so tempted. Would make a great stablemate for my 335xi. Only problem is that I'm in Alberta. However, the fiancee works for WestJet. It'd be cheap and simple to flight out and pick this baby up. Sigh. Ok. I'll try to stop dreaming about this thing...

Am I just deluding myself by thinking that maintenance and running costs would be much cheaper on one of these than an E39 M5? Because I found one of those too and love those just as much. This seems like more of a classic though and the kind of car that I'd never want to sell....

maintenance costs will be higher on this car than the E39

Really? Why so? Just because it's older. I figured that the E39, with its predilection for drinking oil, eating up clutches and tires and the VANOS unit problems would all make those more of a maintenance hassle. Plus all the little stuff that goes wrong with them, like pixels dying in the dash and stuff.

mmmmmm, those ITBs. As long at there isn't a bunch of rust underneath, it's totally worth it.

I'VE BEEN FINDING SO MANY WITH REASONABLE PRICES
I'm seriously going insane. I want to buy a house just because I want a place to put cars.

The awesome thing is that it looks like it's had a lot of maintenance work done to it. Which is sweet.

'91 e34 M5 owner here. Bought the car in November with 118k miles on it, currently have 125k. Got it for 10k, dumped over 10k into it. Mechanically, this car is VERY solid. Everything I have done thus far (minus the gas tank, had a leak) has been preventative (seals, subframe, gaskets, cooling system, etc). The S38 is an amazing engine and this car delivers the full package- the sounds, smells, feels.
These cars are very rare, and a euro spec is even rarer. The car in question looks to be in good shape, though the miles are kind of high. I'd say it's worth around 9k. The interior looks to be in really good shape, though the door cards show some signs of slight warping.
... DO IT.

Do you ever see these potentially appreciating in value? I'm surprised that they're not worth more now, honestly. I feel like they'll probably go up in the future. Beautiful car, btw!

As we are all apparently Bimmer lovers here.... (And I, a fellow E92 335i owner), I say do it! She's gorgoeous! The E34 M5 will always have a warm place in the hearts of those who know the truth!

Daddy Silvestro (AKA Mr. Used Cars Suck): "no, I cannot"
You: "then NO"

Yes. They're already on the rise. According to Hagerty, the average value has gone up about 3k in the past year or so. It's no 80's 911, but I'll take it! I always monitor prices of e34 for sale and it's getting much harder to find one under 10k in good shape. There's probably less than 900 running examples in the US.

Gorgeous! Love the look of those engines. Something about actually being able to see the intake covers and throttle bodies versus a giant lump of plastic on modern BMW engines.

It's funny that you mention the Euro-spec and how rare that is. I've actually seen a number of Euro-spec E34 M5s in Canada, thanks to our surprisingly lax vehicle import policies and recioprocal agreeements with a number of European countries. I'm sure that they're much more rare than the regular, NA-spec M5 though...

I don't believe there are any differences between euro and NA spec cars (other than the cat) until the 3.8L came along for the European market. The performance difference between the two is surprisingly negligible. I know the euro markets had better interior options, and that's one pain in the ass aspect of the e34 cars. The vinyl interior door panels tend to warp. Clean used ones are unicorns, new ones are 700 bucks each, and there's no easy fix. I was lucky to find some leather panels with wood trim, but full sets of those are also very rare.

Haha. I posted this in July. So glad I waited now rather than pulling the trigger on this. The one I'm buying is so much nicer. And has a fully rebuilt engine. And is cheaper.
