Oh look, twin distributors you know what that means.

Kinja'd!!!

I heard they were thinking about using a flat 16 for Can-am, but I didn't know they actually made one!

The BRM H16 is, of course, a bit more compact. Also two dizzies.

Kinja'd!!!

Neither is as pretty as a Jabiru 5100, though that has two dizzies for eight.

Is that engine aircooled? Is it an airplane engine?

(raises hand) 32 spark plugs to gap.

Yep. Lycoming and Continental made boxer eights in much larger numbers than Jabiru, but there still aren't that many out there. I want to build a hot rod with an air-cooled boxer 8+ some day.

Pictured, a Lycoming:

Was it a true boxer 8 like the 908, or was it just a 180 degree V8?

Oh the joy it must be to change all those spark plugs out.

16 plugs? It's a flat 16.

The Jabiru has to have twin distributors and two plugs per cylinder because it's a plane engine. Each distributor powers one set of plugs.

Twin distributors, it means it has 2 plugs per cylinder! 32 in total!

The Jabiru 2200 (a flat four) was a true boxer, so I believe the 5100 was as well. The Lycoming IO 720, though...

Well, as you can see below, it's kind of neither. It's like a boxer with the pairs displaced from one another - pairs aren't opposite, but the engine still has individual journals. It's arguably most similar to a truncated/ half-offset straight eight.

Yes, but the Can-Am flat sixteen he has pictured has dual ignition as well - not for plane engine reasons, but probably for burn control. Count the dizzy leads - two 16-cylinder custom distributors. Absolutely absurd.

Oooo I have seen a picture of this crank before. I would say it is a boxer because it has individual pins, but it isn't exactly at the correct angles to be a boxer. I wonder if it needs both to be a boxer. Here is the Porsche's.

Kinja'd!!!

It is kind of hard to tell from the picture but it seems that the first 4 are set at 180 degree intervals, then a 90 degree angle between 4 and 5 and then 5-8 are at 180. . . don't know if that counts as a boxer. I am just guessing the angles though.

I've been trying to do a census of each distributor's leads and yes, there seem to be more than eight apiece.

The result was probably like the 917 where you had to pull the engine to change some of the plugs.

Nope, 32. Those Porsche motors had two plugs per cylinder.

Here's a 5.0l 12
