If you like bad-ass mech battles, it's worth watching Broken Blade.

I liked redline. Very F-zero-ish
I also can recommend Ghost in the Shell, if you like cyberpunk sci-fi, Twin Spica (Futatsu no Spica) for a great story, Serial Experiments Lain (quite strange, and the ending is slightly disturbing) and, if you want to laugh your ass off, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt or Excel Saga.

^This, but maybe in the reverse order to ease into it a bit.

Jesus.. starting off with Elfen Lied? That's brutal but awesome.

If he's looking for racing inspired anime, I can definitely recommend IGPX.

I would add Ghost in the Shell and Outlaw Star to that list as well.

Goddamn! An anime OVA series about the safari rally in I believe the 1988 WRC season. Detailed animation of the sierra cosworth, toyota celica, Audi 200, and more, including the famous gif of the 205 and 037.

Racing mechas? Nice! I didn't knew it.

I haven't been lately watching much anime. One of my hard drives failed (actually the controller not he drive) and now I can't even reach my anime stash.
The one's I liked but haven't yet been mentioned could be: Bakemonogatari, Serial Experiments Lain and Darker than Black. I liked also Macross Plus but many people do dislike it a lot.
I wonder why Initial D hasn't been mentioned.

Depends on what you're looking for. Anime is laden with genre and variety. I've been rewatching the Full Metal Alchemist (brotherhood... Don't bother with the regular) and as I'm sure you saw the Gundam war a few nights ago on here the Gundam series is massive. One of the longest running series out there. Plus you get big ass mechs but a lot of war politics so it isn't just mindless fighting.
If you want mindless fighting with some cheeky humor and plenty of boob comedy go Sekerei

They also fight each other as well, as part of the race.

If you want a pretty smart anime, with a lot of fighting/guns, I would suggest checking out Jormungand. I personally consider it a bit of an upscale Black Lagoon.

Hajime no Ippo - watch subtitled
One Piece (longest active series and potentially longest series ever when it is finished but so worth it) - dubbed version RUINS this show
Ex-Driver
Shiguri
The first 120 or so episodes of Naruto and Bleach.

Beck, Cross Game, Honey & Clover, Sword Art Online, Ookiku Furikabutte, Patlabor, Natsume Yuujinchou, Planetes
I favor non-action anime, if you're looking for something a little more mature and realistic then some of these are good choices.

Planetes is such an uplifting series.

I haven't watched Lain since high school, so almost 10 years ago? Jesus that was a trippy show.
+1 to Bakemonogatari

Space Battleship Yamato / Star Blazers. One of the first to come over to the US. A staple of my childhood. People died, man. Died and didn't come back. Not like GI Joe where no one could shoot and and every ejection resulted in the crew man hitting the ground running.

Any Gundam but Gundam Seed, Neo Genesis Evangelion, SNK, Log Horizon, Dragon Ball, Gunslinger Girls, The Bean Bandit, Wolf's Children, Hellsing Ultmiate. That just a few I can name off hand

Watch Moretsu Pirates (aka Bodacious Space Pirates, aka Miniskirt Pirates) it is win, awesome and love all rolled up.
If you like D&D, watch Slayers. It's rather long (including the OAVs it's 100+ eps) but so worth it.
For a rom-com, Tenchi Muyo is pretty much the prototype and best example; just be warned there are two versions, the OAVs or Tenchi TV, and avoid Tenchi in Tokyo like the plague.
It makes Excel Saga seem normal, but I'm really enjoying Space Dandy.

I may have to check that out

The only anime I have seen outside DBZ was Nichijou, and that is possibly the funniest show I have ever seen. So go watch it or something. Plus the animation is awesome!

Quack Pack, clearly.

Oh fuck, how can I forgot about Hellsing Ultimate? God damn, those OVAs are amazing.
Not to mention it's got one of the best OSTs of any show or movie - period. One Million Bullets is an amazing song.

If you don't care about having a coherent plot, there's always FLCL.

Riding Bean, biotch.
(This one's a movie, not a series.)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, either the original series or the new versions.
Initial D.
X-1999, the movie and the TV series.
Chobits....... what? I like it.
Patlabor
Gunsmith Cats, I prefer the manga, but whatever.
Knights of Sidonia.
Macross Frontier, and Macross Plus, the OVAs, not the movie.
Ttrigun.
Can't really think of anything else woth mention that haven't been suggested already.

Metabots and girls-und-panzer were pretty good.
