You drop the sump plug in the catch pan.

And here I thought I was the only one who has done this. I say there's at least a 25% chance I will do this whenever I do an oil change.

Could be worse. Try changing the oil of a BMW K1600. You drop the plug in the pan somewhere, the entire exhaust comes off.

Same here. It'd happened once before so I was thinking the whole time, "don't drop it, don't dro.... Oh god damn it.".

Yuuuup. Reason #1 why I use one like this:

because the hot oil burns your hand and then you reach into the burning oil for the plug and burn your hand again.

If I wasn't such a cheapskate I'd pick up one of those, I use an old washing up bowl...

That would be a bad bike for me to own then, I'm terrible for dropping bolts and such.

I was actually smarter this time around and waited for the oil to cool before retrieving it. Learnt my lesson from last time...

I use this style drain pain just to avoid that issue, so if I drop it it is only in a tiny bit of oil, and the two holes into the lower area are too small for the drain plug to fall down in there.

If you can fit an old strainer over it, that should do the trick!

That's a good idea. I should have probably thought of that before considering how often I end up dropping the things...

My innate cheapness/brokeness stops me from buying stuff like that... Yamahog had a pretty good idea for something similar that wont cost me anything tho.

But think of the benefits of all those hot oil treatments! Your skin must be so soft!

Only happens when I go to change oil within 5 minutes of shutting the engine off, so the oil is a nice, calming 200-degrees Fahrenheit. And because it's a vat of oil, it takes a really long time to cool down to the point of reaching in and grabbing the plug without getting burned. Oh what fun.

Fun indeed. Although this time I dropped it because clumsy not because of the searing hot oil. Did have to wait quite a while to retrieve it though...

After the amount of work on cars I've done in the last few days my skin is like a 30 year old biker jacket..

one better - putting the plug back in, threads stripped out the pan completely, then the plug falls in the oil.

Ignore all of this following . Kinja won't let me delete it and I don't feel like retyping . Ignote This is nothinothin g, tsltinz

That would be awful, haven't yet stripped a sump plug. Managed to torque a wheel nut so tight it snapped though...

ayup. Ive owned three of those things over the years (cheaper wal mart versions, i just leave them with the oil recyclers on my last drop off before i made multi-state moves.)

I dont even pretend to want to catch the plug, it just gets dropped right into the catch basin by the time im done doing/checking other things the oil has slowed to a slow drip and the plug is sitting high and dry in the little webbing that keeps it from falling INTO the actual container.

I QUERY THE FORUM: WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL BEST FOR AN OIL CHANGE?

ramp/jack (or wiggle under if you have a truck),pop hood, arrange pan, drop nut, while draining arrange your fresh oil, fresh filter, and funnel to be ready.. wait.. slow drip, replace nut, wipe drain hole, move pan, pull old filter. dip rubber seal of fresh filter into the top catch area of the drain pan to lube it, thread it on, wipe area, pull yourself and drain pan and used filter out form under rig, proceed to refill with fresh. dip stick checking, replace filler cap, close hood, de-ramp/jack.

~20 minutes.

I've dropped a filter in a pan. Cleaning up after that was fun.

I assume oil splashed absolutely everywhere. Scrubbing the driveway is never fun after leaking oil onto it.

My white hat was ruined. Otherwise, it was in a shop where people much less competent than I made messes every day. Just throw some absorbent on it.

ooh I've done that too. Stem just laying on the ground and or stuck in the lug nut.

Luckily on the sump I was able to use an oversized plug to recut the threading. Yeah, 4 hour oil change on a lowered car up on ramps but still barely able to fit under. Horrible experience
