This conversation just happened..."Hello is this Tom? This is So-and-So from Blah Blah Dealership calling (for the third time) When can your customer come in for a test-drive?

Me- "My customer will not be coming in for a test-drive?"

Them- "Why not?"

Me- "Because last week you said it was your policy not to give lease quotes via email or phone. Your competitors gladly sent me numbers and my customer took delivery last Tuesday. You lost the sale."

Now what I want to say is, "So how is that policy working out for you?" but my professionalism gets in the way.

I think you handled it appropriately. The current sales system is slowly changing. My local SC BMW dealer in town was horrible. I ordered my car from a dealer in FL via email and fedex. Easiest process ever.

Dealer foolishness is intense. I can't imagine what you do on a regular basis and I only worked at a dealer for a while.

Do you have enough participation from other dealers to just not call them anymore?

That's too funny!

I had the same conversation earlier today with a SoCal Subaru dealer that shall remain nameless. What the guy on the phone did say was that he'd beat anyone else's price.

So, following that call I got lease quotes from 5 other dealers in the greater Los Angeles area. I then called the guy back, shared the numbers I'd gotten and sure enough he folded. He gave me a full rundown on the lease options and came in under all the other dealers prices.

Now to get the downpayment dropped another $500 and I'll consider this a victory for my friend.

Now I'm intrigued, because I work at a SoCal Subaru dealer. As a technician though, so I ghave no personal investment in this story.

When I bought my last car, I emailed a whole bunch of dealerships. Every dealer for that brand within an eight hour drive of me. Many simply didn't return my email. A couple did, and while not dompetitive, were at least willing to talk numbers. Only one flatout refused to deal with me via email. He said he "didn't like being shopped around on."

Yeah? Too bad. My money. My rules.

In the end, the dealer nearest me was able to offer me the best price anyway.
