It seems like every time I was our cars there's a new scratch/paint chip. Is it from the abuse of being driven daily and rocks an things get thrown up and hit the car?

oh I know why my vehicles are scratched, on that topic, the new VW's have the softest crappiest paint in the world.

I don't wash my Jeep out of fear of finding how many scratches and dents I have put in it in the 8 months since it's left the dealer.

Just daily wear and tear. The amount of rock-chips I find on the Vue's front end is bordering on ridiculous.

Yeah. I think it also depends on the kind of car. The SUVs that we've owned never had a single scratch, but the leaf and odyssey seem to pick up tons of small ones. And my parents are good drivers, it's not like they hit things and get scratches from that.

It gets worse though.

Believe it or not, those all started as little rock chips, or something of that sort.

All I have is anecdotal evidence, but this sure seems to be true. Especially since I put 100 miles a day on mine.

That's a shame. I feel bad for cars.

I haven't had that problem, but I will likely be getting some touch up paint for rock chips soon.

Try owning a work truck! My trucks doubled for leisure and work (I don't do manual labor anymore). By work, I mean hauling tools and machines to having rocks dumped right into the box without anything protecting the paint.

On the oldest one, a 2002 Silverado 1500HD, the top few inches of the bed are littered in tiny 2-3 mm primer spots from paint chipping off. The front end is scraped up just from rocks being picked up and thrown at it. I had 3 windshield replacements on it before I sold it (well over 300,000 km).

Sadly this seems normal. In fact if you don't want the car to be a garage queen, you just have to resign yourself to some minor chips and scratches. I try to make myself feel better by telling myself I can always repaint that part. :-)

True. And hearing that other people experience the same thing makes me feel better. :)

yup, many are the chips and dings, but noticed this crack in my plastic grill surround this past wash

the front bumper certainly takes the brunt of the daily driving damage, but the bottom of the door sill certainly see some, really need some mud guards. or, you know, get a new crappy daily driver so the toy can sit unused again :P

Don't think of them as damage, think of them as battle wounds. It means you drive you car, and it isn't garage kept, so congrats! I wear mine proudly, :).

I see a new one on my wifes car everytime I wash it. Mine may get one or 2 a year. I'm anal though. I won't follow too closely. I don't follow any 18 Wheelers or construction equipment at all. They have double the tires to throw stuff up, and never sweep the rocks off their trailers before getting on the highway. I'm also very careful where I park. She calls it a sickness.
