Virgil Exner had a significant impact on car design in the middle of the 20th century. In the 40's cars went from big and boxy to sleek and rocketship-like by the 50's, and Exner was a big part of that transformation.

There is probably a long list of great reasons why cars are symmetrical, but Virgil Exner didn't care about any of those. Cars probably never needed aircraft-like tail fins, but Virgil didn't want to hear it. Sloping roof lines suck for tall people and useful cargo space, but one man had the courage to forgo all reason, and deliver several of the most beautiful cars in history.
