After autocrossing a 228i this weekend, I can't seem to pull myself away from the online configurator. I had been planning to keep my Mini for at least another year, but I'm not so sure this is possible anymore. $42k is pretty damn reasonable for the spec I want.
Similarly equipped M235i for comparison. Not sure if worth the extra cash.

Buying new german cars is an addiction, the consequences are your wallet, and autocross is your peer pressure.
BMWs. Not even once.

228i for sure, I'd save my money if I really wanted the M235i and wait for a real M2.

Yup...I have the same problem now. I drove the 228 on Fri, I figure in about 3 years or so you can find a nice CPO 228 for under 30k.

228 with a mild tube should be able to keep up with a 235 easy. But if your not into tuning, then I'd lean for 235. It's a hard choice for sure.

Can the LSD be fitted on the 228 or only the 235?

I also AutoXd it too at the BMW Ultimate Driving Experience thing at Metlife.
I found the steering WAY too soft, and the gearing for the steering was also too long. There was a tight almost hairpin in the autox course where I had to rotate the wheel MORE than 180 degrees, and to do that, I had to take my hands off the wheel. It was like it had a 15:1 ratio, and never tightened up even with sport mode on. I wish it had like a 12:1 steering ratio.
Overall it's a SUPER fun car. I just think the Msport packages should be more aggressive in terms of steering feel/input, and dampening. Maybe they deliberately made it soft so there's room for an M2 with another $10k premium tacked on top.....

As a 135is driver, I recommend going for the bigger motor. Basically it boils down to the following:
_28i - "Ok this feels kinda quick."
_35i - "Oh look the traction control light is blinking at me again on a completely flat, straight road."

What's $5000 more over 60 months? In reality the M235i will hold it's value better as well if you decide to sell in a few years. Think ZHP vs a regular 330. Your call though. Either one is a good choice.

Went out to dinner with friends yesterday and parked next to our CX-5 was an F80 328i alpine white sport wagon. It was stunning. Had the coral red interior and MSport. I got home and priced one out on the configurator, it was almost 50k. Too rich for my blood. I will make do with my 128 :)

Yeah, there was also one point on the course where I had to shuffle my hands a bit, but overall I didn't think the steering was that bad. I'm primarily going to be using the car as a highway commuter, so lack of a super tight steering ratio isn't that big of a deal to me. I have another car for autox.

"Kinda quick" is probably enough for me. The car will be a daily driver.

Tune would be a must. How much do one of them JB4 thingamajigs go for anyway?

The rational adult in me really wants to wait 2 years and pick up a CPO car

I don't see why you can't get it on the 228. Both cars have the same transmission choices as far as I know, so the rear end is probably the same.

Hmmm this has piqued my interest. Less than I thought as well....
The only question is, what will you do??
All of these choices, none of them really wrong. Tough decision.

Wouldn't see why either, but I haven't seen anything saying you can. http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthr…

I say go for the M235i instead....

Many are expecting the M2 to be roughly 8-10k below the M3. That's still a good 10k over the base M235i....All this is still speculation, but usually this speculation is a good ball park figure. I say go for the M235i and call it a day.

Absolutely love that combo 328 wagon! Too bad they're so freakin expensive! $50k…that can get you WAY more car.

It's also an expensive option too. I'd rather put the money towards an M235 (without an LSD). Much more fun!

agreed, 50k for a 2 liter 4 banger :/
