Realized that I'll never take my Mazda 6 to the track. Thinking a $900 or less VW golf, runs but no interior, horrible paint, etc.

For real. Just something fun to thrash around, work on, and pay almost nothing for. Ideas? Suggestions? Looking for something manual and not too big. A 1989 750il is tempting, but not really sporty.

E36. There's a 328i near me for $1100 but it needs a headgasket.

E36 is a pretty great idea. I've seen a guy smoking M3s with his 325 at the local autocross.

Why don't you want to take the 6 to the track? Because extra wear? Because dd?

Yeah the E36 is a great track platform. Even a bone stock 318 will do well on the track. With a skilled driver, it's crazy just how well an E36 can perform.

Because 150k on a six speed Auto, and because DD.

I fear I can't work on those so well, and parts... Like idk. E30 I'd do no question, but I missed that by about 3 years..

e30 is way too high these days for your goal. e36 is not that tough.

A Miata in my town with 330,000 miles just went for like 3 or 4k. They're obnoxiously overpriced here, and at 6'4" I do not fit, head or legs.

I flew to Virginia to buy mine for 2k and drove it back. I'm 6'0" and I fit with helmet and the top up and I've had people taller than you drive mine.

What about a Pontiac Grand Am? For the 1999-2005 models you could get a 5 speed manual.

Something like this but with the 5 speed manual

That's a car designed to actually try a bit at the track. Mine is not.

Did find a 5.0 Fox Body Cougar, missing all documents though. The thought had crossed my mind, but I'd say it's hard to find an untouched one

What about a Volvo 240? RWD, cheap, and really reliable! And there are plenty of kits to improve the suspension!
