I've been fighting with the sound of my FR-S exhaust for months now ever since I put on a performance exhaust manifold.
First there was the exhaust that the previous owner had put on, which sounded like the very worst Honda civic ever (especially bad a 1:06) It simply did not get along with the exhaust manifold at all.
I tried the stock muffler, but it sounded uninspiring and weighs about 25lbs more than I wanted. (I didn't bother tasking a video of that)
Then I decided "fuck it" and I put a straight pipe on (sorry about the vertical video)
Honestly I really liked the way it sounded (because racecar), but it was just WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD. The final straw came when I found that I was 3db louder than the limit for local autocross and track days. I started looking around for another option, but most of the "quiet" systems end up being just as heavy as the stock muffler. So I spoke to the guys who built my exhaust manifold and they assured me that adding a small muffler to the straight pipe would actually make a significant difference in sound level without changing the tone much. I was skeptical, but decided it was worth a shot.
I'm pretty happy with it, it's loud but not obnoxiously so and doesn't sound like a bunch of bees trapped in a tin can.

Did you hear the second one? Basically the same thing but only cost $100
Also the straight pipe pulled off 105dB @ 100ft :)

I think it sounds excellent before, much nicer than UEL headers with a straight pipe. . .
Are you getting a Nameless muffled track pipe? I wish I could remove my muffler for autocross but no one makes anything for the Perrin catback. I could get this

What the?!? that is the most obscenely loud vehicle I've ever heard
and Yes,already got and installed the nameless muffled track pipe, that's the third video. I'm really happy with how much it cut the overall volume, and it's still only about 5 lb heavier than the 60R.

Yeah, UEL headers make things a bit louder! Which is great if you want to be heard miles away.
Yeah for 1/9th the price I say the 5lbs is worth it. Although the 60R is super sexy, titanium exhausts doesn't make the best sounds, plus they are even louder.

Yes I think a equal length along with titanium exhaust would probably make the raspiest exhaust note in history.
And I noticed that with the UELs, my buddy has the JDL UEL header and even the standard 2.5" nameless with the largest muffler option was louder (I think) than my current set up with the muffled track pipe.

I haven't experienced that yet. I daily drive my set up and it is pretty quite when below 50% throttle. At WOT it is loud but it passes the 50ft 100dB test(as I learned today). Always wanted a straight pipe for autocross though, I think it would be fun! I would still have a muffler, so it should be quiet enough.

That is what attracted me to the nameless set-up, their track pipe is two bolts and one exhaust hangar, literally a 2 minute changeover. I can drive out to tracks without noise restrictions in relative quiet then just remove the muffler and install the bypass right there upon arrival.

By muffler I meant resonator in the midpipe. I would be removing the muffler with a muffler delete :P
Yeah, taking the Perrin muffler off is a real pain, takes about 10 to 15 minutes. What attracted me to it was the fact it was used and I could get it for less than 1/2 new!

Plus it certainly doesn't hurt that the Perrin is the best sounding exhaust in my opinion with uels.
You could probably get a custom muffler delete for the Perrin made by a local exhaust shop (probably on the cheap too). That way you would only have to remove to the rearmost v band clamp

Kind of off topic, but I'm curios. What kind of WHP are people getting out of these things with full bolt-ons(breather mods) and a tune? Also whats needed to do a tune, does it require a piggyback ECU?

It's a fully rewritable ECU from the factory. All you need is a flashing device and tuning software (there are a few options). I'm putting out right around 200whp with full bolt ons and tune. Its also pretty easy to remove around 150lbs without spending a ton.
But honestly, if power is the goal, themost cost effective solution would be supercharging, or a different car.

200rwhp honestly sounds like plenty to me. I was just curious what could be done with these things. If I want big power I'll drive my c6z. These cars just really appeal to me for some reason. I like the idea of being able to drive a car hard without being WAY outside the law.

Those are exactly my thoughts on the car as well. It's the whole slow car fast thing. Though with proper tires, I've yet to meet a car on the track that pulls away in corners.
