Despite his poor luck. He is definitely the best driver in F1. Starting at the back of the pack and finishing 3rd. While maintaining tires better than anyone and setting the fastest laps of the race. I don't think anyone is as good as he is. Just hasn't been going his way lately.

"Starting at the back of the pack and finishing 3rd. While maintaining tires better than anyone and setting the fastest laps of the race, while in the best car in the field ."
Fixed that for you.
I don't like his personality, but credit where credit is due...on a level playing field, Alonso is probably the hardest driving and most skilled.

Credit where credit is due Riccardo is pretty damn excellent and Hamilton isn't the best his Mercedes just does like it has rocket jets on the back.

Casually forgetting Hamilton's rookie year?

To be fair, Vettel achieved much the same in Abu Dhabi in 2012.
I rate Hamilton highly as a driver, but I believe that if they'd put Fernando Alonso in one of the Mercedes cars, this title would be a one-horse race.

Best car = starts up front and pulls away (Nico)
Best driver = can take a car from last, go through 80% of the field, and finish with a podium.
That said, Alonso is a great driver in his own right, he's a three-time world champion and bested Schumi for some of those.

He now had some sort of problem in Qualifying 5 times in a row. I mean come on.

Uh, no. I mean, don't get me wrong, Hamilton is definitely up there in the top 3 as far as drivers go, imo. But going from last through 80% of the field would have actually been impressive to me if he wasn't with Mercedes. A top-3 driver with one of the two best cars in the field should be EXPECTED to be able to make up that much ground. Any of the other top guys would have been able to do the exact same thing if they were driving the Merc.

Personally, I feel it comes down more to the car than his driving abilities being that much better than the field. He has made a number of bone head decisions in qualifying. If he went from the back of the pack to a podium in a Marussia then I'd gladly agree.

Ordinarily, I might agree with you, but I think if Nico had started at the back, we would have seen the same result. The Mercedes car is so superior this year that the only thing I'm left wondering is why Hamilton wasn't able to bag P2. He probably would have without driving in to Button.

Agree that Hamilton near the top. He's at least the equal of any other driver, and maybe faster than Alonso in terms of raw speed. I just wish he would keep his damn mouth shut and stop slagging other drivers. It's really off putting. Rosberg, on the other hand, is too smart to be drawn in to the name calling game. I think his intellect will keep him slightly ahead of Hamilton this year as it allows him to be the more complete package.
