On a scale of very to veeery, how bad of an idea would it be to buy !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?
Of course, the real answer is "I don't know" because this is one of those classic CL ads that is absurdly brief and appallingly optimistic. If this car is $1000, it's sure as hell carrying some baggage
And despite the rarity, elegance, and little Bertone badges of the 780, I'd still rather have a 740.

More bad than a little old lady -owned 740 in the North Bay, less bad than the Volvo 242 turbo that caught fire. Assuming it drives straight and passes the sniff test, buy it.

Veeeeeery bad. The reason those ads are so brief, is they have nothing good to say. Back in April, I drove an hour and a half to see a camper described simply as "Nice", and accompanied by 6 or 8 photos. Luckily it was a beautiful day for a drive, because the camper was completely tore up.

I'd be tempted to look anyway, especially if it's one of the rarities with a manual transmission and the turbo redblock. These cars are getting really scarce, so it might be worth grabbing one.
Could try calling up and getting more info i.e. why it's listed as Salvage and where the rest of the description went.

A lot of salvage cars were stolen and recovered and were not involved in an accident. I think California is especially known for having salvage titles for cars that were previously stolen. Check it out, you might be OK.
edit: in the end if it runs and it's a $1000 car you really can't go wrong.

The only manuals were swaps correct?

Nope, you could spec it with the M46 4-speed or M47 5-speed from the factory, mated to the 2.3 Redblock or *shudder* the PRV V6
