Kinja'd!!!9 Kinja'd!!! 12

Drove out yesterday (Friday evening), driving about a 160 mile round trip bringing a friend back home, who just was stuck being in a drughouse for 3 weeks in a town 80 miles away, (which was Cornwall, ON, you locals) with no way back home.

Kinja'd!!!

So, earlier this month, a friend of mine decided to visit his sister for the Canada Day holiday, and for some inexplicable reason, his ride back got arrested (the car was an '09 Challenger, or so I was told, no news on the car after the "arrest").

Here's the kicker, my friend's sister dates a drug junkie, so marijuana, cocaine, and heroin are involved in that house. My friend did not bring his wallet, (if he did, it would constantly be looted for money, for you guessed it, drugs), so the weekend was ending, and he wanted to leave, and here comes news of the guy who drove him there (also the ride back) getting arrested, possibly for partying too hard.

So, fast forward 3 weeks, to this past Thursday, he calls me, saying, "Hey bro, can you come pick me up? I've been stuck here for THREE weeks, and my ride back has been arrested. I have no money and I can't afford a bus ticket back". His sister couldn't lend him any money for a $25 bus ticket, because the junkie would spend it all before she could. After we met up at a nearby McDonald's, he was relieved to see me, and seeing the sights of Ottawa, he was even more relieved to have gotten away from that place. His clothes were soaked with the stench of marijuana, he still was probably the happiest guy alive, and said he'll make up for it.

Damn...this is why it's best to avoid Junkies. You never know when or how they could get you in trouble...

"for 3 weeks in a town 80 miles away, (which was Cornwall, ON, you locals) with no way back home."

80 miles is two good days' walking.

Youre a good man. I hope your friend is a good enough man to tell his sister she belongs somewhere better than where she is. Goes without saying she deserves better that who she's with.

I have a very good friend who had her family get really ripped up over something not unlike this. Its hard to see it happen, but Id do anything she needs to help her get away.

he was somewhat considering that. But being broke, and no way to stay hydrated/fed, he waited on me.

His sister lives with the guy somewhat, and I'm sure he told that to her already. She stopped smoking pot after he said that he wouldn't talk to her if she smoked. She respects him, and I'm sure she'll realize over the smallest of things.

My friend was in foster care most of his life, He's experienced alcoholism, and a bit of drug abuse in those homes, but he never took any. He's living in a group home right now, which is much better than those foster homes.

I never expected this when I was 15, I knew his sister, she never would do something like this. Oh well.

That's when life gets interesting - and you find out whether or not you're somewhere civilised.

I only ever ended up in the situation as a result of being young and stupid, but everyone should try being a hundred miles from home with empty pockets sometime.

Due to an unfortunately erroneous belief in the propensity of cards to come up in certain combinations, I once ended up walking back from Cambridge to London overnight. Somewhere round about Ware I managed to pick up a lift from a lorry, which helped a bit, but that was still a good 30 miles in eight hours or so.

You've got to be a bit lacking in shame, too, but that comes once you've been walking for hours. I got the lift because I asked for directions to London in a lorry depot, even though I knew the way, and started off by telling them that I'd walked from Cambridge. (Yeah, I'd been working on that for a mile or two by then...)

It's a bit like one of those survival shows where some guy with a beard shows how to build a shelter out of a salmon and two stick, only for urban areas. If you think about how to work it, you don't really need any money to get around.
