This guy I used to be friends with is selling his car over Craigslist. I looked at his ad, and, being the asshole he is, I noticed he "stretched the truth" (read: lied) in several areas on the listing to try to get a quick sale.
Ugh... Is it that hard to be honest?

The operative part is "used to be friends." I imagine there was a reason for that.

To some it can be.
Personally I try to be as honest as possible and emphasize exactly what the car is and if there is any known problems. But I clearly state that it is "AS IS WHERE IS" so if something breaks in 2 days it's your own damn problem don't call me. It's up to you to either get the car checked out by a reputable shop or check it out for yourself before buying it.
When I sold my Twin Turbo Soarer. the guy I sold it to went street racing all night and blew a turbo. When he called me I asked him "Did the car work fine when you left my house?" "yes it was perfect" he replied. "Good, then it's not my problem don't call me again."

Yup... It's unfortunate, because we used to be like brothers, but I guess some switch just flipped and he turned into a totally different person.

I totally agree. After the sale is made, it is completely their responsibility, but being dishonest in an ad to reel them in is just wrong. Hopefully, if/when someone goes to look at it, they get it checked out well, and the only thing wasted is their time, and nothing worse.

He's just wasting his own time then. Theres no point meeting with people that are expecting a different car than what he has. I'm going to be selling a 99 Civic I bought at an auction in the next couple of weeks. The AC doesn't work. Now I could leave that out of the listing and probably get 5-10 people show up, but turn it down when they find out the AC doesn't work. Or I could be honest and set the expectation before they get here. The first person to see it who doesn't care about AC will buy it I guarantee you.

Yeah, but it irritates me that he'd be wasting someone else's time by misleading them into looking at a car that's not the same as what's described, plus he'd likely lie and try to pressure them into the sale by saying that whatever problems they find are cheap and easy to fix.
If they buy it anyway, then it is technically their fault for buying it without doing more research, but a sale shouldn't be high-pressure.

I grew up with a friend since 5th grade, and we were inseparable. We went off to different schools, and different careers, but we stayed pretty close through email, etc. But he went off the deep end of the gun culture and far right politics, and I finally ended our friendship. I haven't spoken to him in years, and I'm bummed about it. But people grow, and they change, and sometimes differences that were overlooked or not fully realized become gulfs that can no longer be crossed. It's sad, but it's life. I hope he's doing well.

Yeah, I'm not too beat up about it, it's just the way life works. Looking back, I'm just kind of surprised that of all people I could've grown distant from, it'd be him.
We have mutual friends, so it's not like we never communicate anymore. One troubling thing I've picked up and pieced together recently from my mutual friends/what I've heard from him, is that it seems like he's cheating on his girlfriend (which kind of gives you an idea of how he's changed). I'm not going to interfere with that whole thing, but it's really too bad, because his girlfriend is in general a really nice person.
