Convinced there is not one appealing image of a Tempo on the internet. My dads looked exactly like this, biggest piece ever. I'm glad how far Ford has come.

I'm also glad how far Ford has progressed in the years since the Tempo. If they were still making stuff like that, I'm sure that they would have been out of business by 2005.

True, although GM wasn't putting out any better. The Contour was better than any dated A-body GM was still selling. The Fusion also blew the Malibu away.

Agreed, I didn't mind the Contour all that much. I thought the SVT was a pretty attractive looking car, I briefly considered one when I was hunting for a car.

But for sure, around 2006 the Fusion definitely blew the Malibu away, the Malibu still looked like a somewhat "Generic" if you will GM product, while the Fusion looked like a new take on the section in which both of the cars were in.

These are what look to be the base models of each car from 2006, the Fusion just doesn't look cheap. It looks respectable and somewhat "executive" while the Malibu looks everything but expensive.

Your series of images is like one of those drawings depicting the evolution of a species. Well done.

I think the best images of the Tempo (or Mercury Topaz, which was just a Tempo with all the options) are in peoples' memories, before everything was instagrammed. That was my wife's college car, and we kept it through grad school and up until a few years in our first house, about 2004. I had to sell it, because she couldn't bear to do it, and I was pretty sad about it myself. I'd worked on it a lot. She rebuilt the CV joints (beyond my patience). We drove it away from our wedding and to our honeymoon. Honestly, I still miss it. The killer was the intermittent electrical issues combined with odd parts of increasing scarcity (like dealer-only machined-profile strut tube retainer bolts in the front suspension). The last straw was it dying on Broadway, in the days before (we had) cell phones. Strangers helped her push it out of traffic and loaned her a phone to get a tow. We sold it the next week.

Should be shown in history books.

Blacked out, it reminds me of a cross between a GNX and first-generation Taurus SHO.

I'm not sure if the funny car could really be called a "ford tempo" anymore.

That would be beautiful. If only car companies accepted their pasts.

Wow. My grandpa which I was very close to bought a red one just as in the picture. He later gave it to my dad for some reason and bought a newer later 90's green one.

All I remember was my dad was only able to start in 2nd gear. His bumper was ripped off also. Brings back a ton of memories, Tempos will always be one of those cars for me.

I wish I was alive in the 80's. The Tempo was probably a handsome car. I'm not offended by it today. I grew up with that thing.

My dad is a pretty self conscious guy and he drove around in one so that tells you something..

Those are the important cars. The ones with memories and personal significance. Exotics and record holders are nice, important even, but the ones that are first in your heart are what you rode in when you were 6 or 16.

I got a Ford Tempo when I was 16. Anemic? Oh you bet. But you don't forget your first car. Many a fond memory.

I was so happy when they finally brought the Mondeo over.
