Pride implies facing opposition though. You are what you are

The following is a rant that has a lot less to do with sexuality, as much about the idea of "self identity" and how much of a bullshit social manipulation tactic it is.

Pride, as a concept, has been greatly changed since the shift in political lexicon after 9/11. We're just NOW getting over (and it shows up in other places) that weird place where it was REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT to be "true to yourself" and "proud of yourself" and "you are who you are" and you had to "find yourself" and "seek identity".

The problem is that your 'identity' isn't a real thing. It's terms, categories, and labels ascribed after the fact. There is no such thing as an 'inherent identity'. There's genetics, but there's no such thing as a "anger gene" or "gay gene" that affects your life decisions like that, it's far more complex and who YOU are is influenced more by what you've experienced and what you've done, than some vague notion of 'identity'.

So now we have a whole lot of people deciding to throw logic, reason, and opportunity out of the window because of an almost-religious belief in the "self identity". It's a self-defeating cycle: if you start acting as if everything in your life cannot be changed, you will stop doing these things to change it, and that makes it seem more obvious that you have this "self identity" because you've stopped allowing new experiences to change your mind.

Now, this is WAY more docile than trying to change someone else (through social stratification, persecution, ostracization) but we basically arrived at a point where instead of trying to improve yourself as best as you can be, if you find resistance in trying to become better, you just sit back and go "that's my self identity, it's just who I am! I need to be true to myself and not do that!" Worse yet, people will get inspired to do things that are detrimental to their mental, physical, and social wellbeing because they get roped into these ideas of identity. "You're a family man, you have to do this.". For example, the gay community at times can be a heavily polarizing group that ostracizes individuals just as much as anyone else for messing with the status quo (which, at times, is absolutely insane) that has been established. But to deny any of that is to not be "true to yourself" or to not "have pride in yourself", as if making a decision on your own without bending to other people's silly demands somehow makes you a weaker person.

"Being true to yourself" is just a reminder to not change what you're doing, even when logic and reason tells you differently. It says that when you are confused, instead of learning and empowering yourself, you should jump back to what you've been doing because it feels safe and is easier, even if it might be detrimental. It's a form of social and political manipulation that keeps people from really understanding what they can do beyond their "self" and exploring the world around them.

So basically you want me to be an asshole.

No thanks. I respect people who respect others no matter their sexuality. You straight? Cool. LGBT? Super. Force your views on others? You just earned a punch to the throat.

I agree with much of what you've said, but in regards to a "gay gene" it turns out there may well be one.

if you think celebrating a norm makes someone an asshole automatically, then you're what's wrong with society and its BS attributions of political correctness. Go read CrazedClay 's reply to this post.

There just so happens to be a Straight White Male festival in my town next month in a big park by our downtown. It's very shameful to me how many people find it pitiful, especially when our Gay Pride festival (which I've attended since I have lived here 6 years ago) gets Shit tons of support.

not forcibly, no. I don't need to be chastised, repressed of who I am simply to be proud.

That would be convenient for some of the most outspoken members of that group wouldn't it. They would then be allowed to blame something else for what many others view as wrong or evil. Another aspect of modern life in which we search for someone or something else to blame for our misfortunes.

Like I said, I don't really care what their sexuality is as long as you don't go piss others off.

Read my statement carefully. As long as you don't go forcing your views onto others on the hope that they convert, then you're golden.
