The only way it could have been worse is if they were using a chain. I was really hoping part of the Ford would break.

Same. I wanted to see the reflex from the rope tug it back over the edge when it stopped pulling.

how would chain be worse? At least when they break they don't sling shot around an kill morons nearby

I'm not a big off roader, and have only had to help someone winch a couple times. So I may be getting them mixed up. I thought that is why no one uses chains anymore.

No chains don't whip when they break but they don't stretch and soften the yank either when you take a running start like they were. Snatch straps are used for off road recovery specifically because they stretch unfortunately morons don't understand that those things can kill if they do break. At least that's what I have come to understand

Well, of course the diesel is rolling coal. No one in this video would miss out on the opportunity to make a bad decision.

The problem with chains is that they store massive amounts of energy so when they break you don't want to be any where near them. Nylon tow straps release all their energy as soon as they break so you're OK, except if there is a chain on one end. Now you have a D-clamp flying towards your head. That's how people die. If you have to use a chain or metal cable, throw a blanket of it, that helps disperse the energy.

Definitely not true. Yes nylon straps release all of their energy as soon as they break but that means they fly that much faster and farther and they also store much more energy than a chain since they are designed to stretch. I think we can all agree that whatever you are using to pull out a stuck vehicle...do NOT stand anywhere near the strap/chain.

Kinetic straps most definitely, I have one and it's like a giant bungee cord. Static straps however will just drop when they break, I've broken two so far and they drop. You are completely right about staying the hell away from the strap when its under tension.
