Or you can get an e36 m3 for 4,000 and have many more spm (smiles per mile). Just an idea.

Fully operational may be a challenge at <$2k.

What's the exchange rate these days?

Is $2K Canadian $6K Muricans yet?

These are a pretty good idea, except you've got to factor a good amount for maintenance into the price.

Well, you can get an E36 328i for that, but it will need work and be faster than a 318ti

If it's not a long commute, I'd suggest a good road bike.

Mk3 Golf. It's the unloved Golf, so they're cheap. 2-point-slow means you'll get wherever you need to be, albeit at a glacial pace. It's a compact car, but without the typical ricer image of a 1990s compact. European build quality also means that you'll always feel solid and safe, even in a lightweight package. Just watch out for rust.

If Japanese is more your thing, the first-gen Infiniti G20/Nissan Primera seems to be a good buy. It has mostly avoided the ricer craze, even though it's got a reasonable chassis and the fabled SR20.
