Use spare time to work on self-started career, save half of everything, invest it wisely.

I would recommend you read the collected works of Horatio Alger.

Can't you find another job? I was a lifeguard for a year getting minimum wage ($7.25) decided I wanted more so I moved to a different pool ($8.75), wantwd more this year so I became an intern at two places and am getting ($12 and $10 per hour). I learned to shop around.

I don't know how old you are, but next summer use some connections or just walk into places. I worked since I was 14. Did the whole camp counselor thing for two years, got tired of it. Then worked in a pizzeria the next year, that was worse. Then I detailed at a BMW dealership the next summer. I got the job because before my mom bought her car I asked the salesman for a job. He came through. Then last year I started working for myself doing home improvements. Made twice as much as the year before at a rate of about $30/hour. Doing the same this year, but with more schoolwork so I can finish early. Basically, be creative, know what you like, and what you can offer. The rest is easy. There are so many places out there that are willing to hire. Most teens go for the obvious places, but walk into a shop and offer to help, call up a pressure washer, etc. If you are willing to work hard $15-20/hour is very doable. Happy hunting.

Perhaps you should open up a street pharmacy.

Doesn't get any better once you start making real money, don't worry. Student loans catch up, the real world catches up, unexpected things catch up.

I love being uplifting.

Especially if you like ragged dicks.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. My mental age just regressed ten years.

Yeah, I figured somebody would go there. As a word guy, it's interesting to see how that word/name has changed its meaning over the years. My 8-year-olds think "Dick's Sporting Goods" is hilarious. "Dick" as penis isn't attributed until 1891, and Alger wrote Ragged Dick in 1868.

I find it interesting as well, and at times a little trying. For example, there is a local grocery chain a little to the north called Dick's Market. A lot of the more conservative folk prefer to call it Richard's.

Yes, that about sums up my reaction. Although it is pretty funny to see the disapproving look they sometimes give you when you call it by its proper name.

I'm not totally penniless and my income is exactly the same as the average income is for males in my country (according to the last survey). I don't have any loan and I live quite cheaply. I don't have have a family either (which is kinda sad even though my wallet appreciates that). But saving money for my dream car(s) is still so slow.

10 years ago I wanted to get a decent Lamborghini Espada. They were quite affordable and I could have bought one if I would have my current savings then. But now the prices for Espadas have doubled or tripled! I'm quite sure that soon there will a lot of affordable Gallardos everywhere. But I don't want a Gallardo but an Espada (or early Countach).

Currently I have tried to forgot acquiring an Espada and I'm trying to find suitable late 70's 911. They are still quite cheap but their prices have been climbing alarmingly. I could gamble and try to finance my nice 911 with a loan. It might be expensive way but then I could beat the price raising trend. Or I could try to cut my living costs even more and save one more year and see what I could afford then.

I'm sure that it must really hard to try get your dreams fulfilled with minimum wage. In my country the second job wouldn't help much because second job is taxed with fixed 60% tax. But if you work in two jobs you don't have any free time that could eat your money. That will help to save money but might also kill you...

Luckily I do work another job but all that money will be going towards paying off college. Thank you for the advice however. Maybe you could live in a tent surely you could afford an Espada then.

I'm 19 as well. I'm guessing you want an internship next summer? I don't know where you are in college, I'm graduating in the spring, or what your major is, but you should still be creative. Say you're a finance or accounting major. See if any of your parents friends own a business or have a decent say in one. Then make an offer. I'd start with free, but at least you'd have some experience and possibly get college credit for the summer (which is worth more than the measly pay).

Don't be embarrassed. Alger was popular in the late 19th century, and practically nobody reads his books any more. But he is associated with the "rags to riches" story that he created, most notably his first story, Ragged Dick, about a shoeshine boy who climbs to modest wealth and respectability through hard work. Think of Alger as sort of the Tony Robbins of his day.

I missed this post when it was fresher, but I was led here by seeing your "Thanks" post and wanted to add.

My biggest piece of advice: Be active, talk to anyone and everyone you can, and become involved with clubs relevant to your interests.

I spent 7 years working for my small town Pizza Hut through high school and college. I got involved with the SCCA, met the right people and was able to get a shot at doing an unpaid internship with Chip Ganassi Racing Teams. Now I'm 23, living across the street from the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona working for NASCAR and IMSA.

A lot of hard work went into it, but more key were the connections I made. Who you know really is a huge part of all this.

Connections will rarely find you - you have to find them!

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > STANDARD6SPEED

That is why I think it is time to move on. You gotta make connections to be successful it seems.

Kinja'd!!!1

It is a huge part of it - I found my connections while still at Pizza Hut though, I went straight from there to Ganassi. Hard work pays off as well, I have pretty much every high-ranking person from that 46-store franchise PH franchise as a reference now, simply because I was a great worker.
