Oppo I'd like some help deciding on a CAI filter for the custom cold air intake that I'm designing for the Sable. I found this filter, looks like one you would get with any other CAI system. I'd like to have the filter out of the engine bay for more cooling. So I'll have to get the pre-filter that you have to buy for it. I have plans for the plumbing to get the air to the engine. Also if anyone knows what elbows would be best for high heat applications that would be great. Thanks in advance Oppo!

K&N kits have a metal bracket that surrounds the filter, and does a decent job of keeping the heat away from the air filter.

Are you going for like a snorkel kind of intake? What do you want the end result to look like?

I would imagine that one would be fine, just shop around Amazon makes online shopping so easy, but you can ALWAYS find a coupon code for advance auto parts.

I had a cheapy one of those once. I can tell you 2 things about COI systems

1. they don't do much aside from add a little (a lot) of induction noise)

2. if you are plumbing one to the outside of your car pay particular attention to water ingest, I've seen lots of low hanging unprotected filter pods hanging down where a good puddle would kill the engine.

Noise the biggest reason why I'm doing and I know about the water issue.

I know about the typhoon system, too expensive for me. End result should have the filter in the fender well.

good good, then this one should work great for you. since its a K&N my only other advice is to not go overboard with the filter oil, you don't need it soaking to work.

Thanks, any ideas for the elbows?

I'm not sure I recommend it. CAI setups for Dodge Neons do the same thing, and hitting a big puddle sends an amazing amount of water to the intake. Neons have a "growling noise" that happens, coincidentally called "Neon Growl."

Have you looked for a used Typhoon system? I picked up my K&N kit for 30% off used on Amazon Warehouse deals...helps being a Prime member.

What about just removing the lower resonator from the intake setup? Wouldn't that give you a big change? Still would allow water to come in though...

The wagon (partially designed by benz) has belly pans that prevent most water from coming up that far, so I don't see issues like that with my massive CAI.

since power isn't the issue, avoid the "bigger is better" trap. the problem with bigger is that the air can stall on the pipe due to a loss of flow and create turbulence that...despite what vornado would have you believe, does not belong in your intake tract. If you can find it, get smooth bends and not sharp. Short ram intakes (in my opinion) sound better than long complicated tracts.

Intake resonator is already out. I'd like a louder intake sound though. And the universal typhoon system is still too expensive and can't be found used.

Note taken, I'm not designing a short ram though.
