07/16/2014 at 10:29 • Filed to: Idris Elba: King of Speed, BBC America | 46 | 100 |
It's very hard to find quality programming in the automotive world. Very few programs are both entertaining and informative, and many don't last a first season before a network cancels the entire show. Think of the Car Show, or how many times Top Gear USA went from in the works to shelved before they got Rutledge, Tanner, and Adam to click.
What I'm trying to illustrate is that it is extremely difficult to make lightning strike and get everything we all want to watch and commit our time to. Somehow, the BBC has got lightning to strike on their side once again with Idris Elba: King of Speed.
I usually have a hard time getting behind car shows, primarily due to the hosts. They are usually stale, old, and talk only about their "good ole days" from when they were kids and how everything today needs to be more analog. It feels as if their fire, their passion for being a petrol/gear head is gone, and that they are just doing this as a job.
It's why I can't get into Velocity's Chasing Classic Cars or Legendary Motorcar. They are just reporting things, sure you get to see cars that are almost never seen, but it is so dry and so boring, I just can't watch it.
TopGear and FifthGear seemed to have pioneered the way a car show should be presented, a bit factual, but also show the love for cars and people will tune in. While those two British shows are great and I will watch every episode, they too are becoming a bit stale. It's the same bits over and over again, the same tests, the same jokes. Nothing has changed, nothing is new, at least to me.
This year we have already seen the first !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of /Drive Networks freshman season which was very good, and I hope the upcoming episodes are awesome too. But until the next episode is out, the BBC has us covered with Idris Elba: King of Speed.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The show centers around the actor Idris Elba, some of you may recognize him from the BBC show Luther, and others will recognize him from a few of the movies he's done, such as The Losers or Pacific Rim. Watching him on the big screen or on TV, I never really thought he would be a car guy. Boy was I wrong.
The show starts off with Idris doing a short monologue to a backdrop of series car porn shots, which usually means it probably will be all about those shots and not much substance. But as you watch, as you listen to his voice, everything starts to fall into place. You are overcome with a sense of genuine love for all things automotive. And that's the key word for this show, genuine.
It isn't some trite act of an actor playing a part; it's one of us talking about our personal cars. It's us discussing, arguing, passionately about which era of Formula 1 is better. It a beautiful representation of what a fan is. What seals it is his smile. You can't fake the grin you get when you're with friends, with other like-minded people, or doing something you always wanted to.
The first episode looks at two different topics, the first being what has befallen Detroit with a bit of its underground racing scene, and second about NASCAR at Watkins Glen. Both of these could be entire shows by themselves, but the way the episode weaves both together allows you to take a journey that pays off big at the end. I won't spoil anything more than that, because you should all watch it.
What makes this episode aren't the amazing camera shots, or even the cars, rather its Elba's cadence, his passion, and the score in the background. I can show you car porn shots all day, but it won't do anything for you without the right music behind it. The score elevates the show, it elevates the presenter, and it just works.
From the previews and commercials I saw before the episode aired, I figured it would be good, but a lot like TopGear due to the silly sounding song they had playing over it. I am happy to say I was wrong. The show is more like the /Drive videos. It's artfully shot, brilliantly scored, and the love of the car seeps through every pore of the show. It's not contrite, it doesn't talk down to you, and it is just an expression of love. This all may sound like I work for the BBC trying to promote the show, but we get far too little really great programming as car fans and when something is this good, it needs to be properly talked about. Go watch it, you won't be disappointed.

I have to agree, I really liked watching it.
It's refreshing to see someone who is passionate about cars, no matter the school of thought behind them. Low-riders and donks aren't something that gets me excited, but seeing people who are truly passionate about them and having a host who helps to convey that was nice.
Also major props for running a Nascar Road Course rather than an oval.

we talked about the show for an hour after watching the show. All those NASCAR guys were a class act. Much props from everyone in NC getting along so well with swlf described Rudeboy from London. and much props to Idris Elba taking on the scariest track on the NASCAR circuit. Those walls!!! And he made Detroit awesome. Everywhere he went he just got along with everyone so well. Something I dont think Top Gear can say. Wow.
This, a thousands THIS. If you missed it you missed brilliant automotive television about a true car guy!!!

Also, Wheeler Dealers should be right up there with Top Gear on the rankings of car guy shows. It gets more technical than any other garage show without all the macho dumbass Texan bullshit that permeates every other show on Velocity, and without the 1%-er attitude of CCC. It also taught me more British than Top Gear ever did.

I watched it the other night and it really is very good. He gushes over things but its totally genuine and not contrived or orchestrated. The show/he seems to have a large story arc so we started with the birth of his passion, then jump to the birth of the mass produced auto to the birth of NASCAR via moonshining. I can't wait to see the rest. Junior Johnson back and forth was excellent and his interaction with the Detroit street racers was coming from someone who's actually talked the talked and walked the walk. His enthusiasm of talking about that XR2 brought up my memories of first seeing/hearing that car eons ago while visiting my UK relatives is what really grabbed me to not change the channel.

They did a major re-edit from when they first aired in December. And that's not really a bad thing as the original airings were disjointed and meh. Also they had to make room for all the commercials. On a personal note I was in the Cannonball segment which aired in episode 1. It was shot last August and Brock, Stephen Fog and myself had a great time spending most of the day with Idris and the crew. He was a total pro and a nice bloke who really likes cars. I hope we don't wind up getting cut from the re-mix episode 2.
P.S. He had just finished shoot the film Mandela a few days before and thought he was dead tired he lit up when the conversation turned to cars.

it was shown over Christmas here in the UK on BBC2 and 2HD, was a hit with the viewers and the British TV Critic who hate these Celebrity driven shows.
Racing Legends is another good series from the BBC, as is Speed Dreams it about men in sheds building cars and bikes for the Bonnville speed week festival.
always been good at Documentary the Beeb, seem to pick the right hosts who are passionate about cars or motorbikes. Jeremy was quote as saying the problem with car reviews it hard not to fall into a pattern, this is due to the limits of what TV Executives and accounts allow you to do.
has seven layers of accounts and middle management about him in the BBC, who rule on his treatment and then decide with one he get to do. with 3.2 Billions pounds of budget cuts and the Licence fee up for renewal in 2016, car guys have to tow the line if they want a job with the BBC.

when you have the BBC's music catalog behind you, of course it's gonna be good. I've seen this show and liked it a lot.
Try making something decent out of it, except someone says "you can't use any music by anyone who the audience has ever heard of. Royalty free only" the challenge gets much harder . That's what we deal with on a daily basis.

I can't tell you how glad I am you put this on my radar. I don't know how I'd missed this as I'm a fan of BBC America's programming and pretty much everything Idris Elba does.
King Of Speed is what an automotive show should be and you're right, they stay away from all the gimmicks that make other shows so hard to watch. Instead of jump cuts, gratuitous speed ramping and whomp music, King Of Speed is a study in restraint and tasteful editing.
It's truly inspiring to see a show like this because it's evidence that there are those out there who see things the way I do. That automotive culture is a melting pot of cultures and attitudes but ultimately everyone, no matter what you're driving or where you're from is after the same thing, speed.

there no car show on free to air channels in Amercia, or anywhere else around the world i think Top Gear the only show that review cars on main stream television any where around the world right now.

Think of the Car Show, or how many times Top Gear USA went from in the works to shelved before they got Rutledge, Tanner, and Adam to click.
Stopped reading right there.

I'm a straight guy, and I'd watch this program just for his voice. It sounds so sexy.

Based on this recommendation, I Youtubed both episodes and watched them back to back. Great series and I hope Idris gets to do a few more in the future.
Highlights for me were the score during his Nascar run; very Batman Begins. And then secondly, when told he should consider dropping down to the smaller training track for his rally racing training, Idris turns around, some temper showing, and emphatically says "No".
There is definitely a relatable element to the emotion of motorsport in this series, and it was great to see.

Wait, a car show with no rockstar costumes, Reality television tropes or "badtitude" flung at you in every take?
I'm sold!

Came here to post this, his best work was during The Wire - he was a huge part of why the show was so critically acclaimed. Who gives a crap about Pacific Rim and The Losers? I've never even heard of the latter. Luther was aiiight

Just watched both episodes. I love that he embraced his weaknesses and even ramped it up after he crashed. He seems like an awesome dude. Thanks for the recommendation, Jonathon!

Idris rules. Fucking terrific actor in everything he does. He has presence. I had no idea he was into cars. I'll definitely be looking to watch this program, for sure.
And I've been saying this for years. He NEEDS to be cast as Green Lantern Jon Stewart in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie. He could even be Cyborg but he would better be served as a GL. That douche, Ryan Reynolds, was a mistake as Hal. Hal is not the most humorous character. Ryan should have been cast as the wise-crackin' Wally West/Flash. Spider-Man is the king of quips, but Flash is among the least serious DC characters.
Anyway, yeah, Idris is da man.
