July 16 marks the 45th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. The 20th is when they landed and the 21st is when they walked on the moon. Definitely one of the greatest of all mankind's achievements. There is a great write up about the launch on Sploid that I recommend you all to see. It is a visual chronicle, from NASA, about the construction and launch of the rocket.

45 Years ago we sent men to the moon. Then wasting no time and not allowing the experiences gained by those men to wasted, we followed up with subsequent missions back to the moon, then to mars, then to the gas giant Jupiter, and even to Pluto. Now, here we are in 2014, about to send our first interstellar unmanned probe to alpha centauri, to be followed by manned missions in about 50 years.

It's also the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 18 mission. There's a 2011 documentary if you'd like more info.

Because people are more interested in blowing each other up than working together to do great things

Because investing money int this stuff doesn't get votes like handouts. Truly sad that the US is lagging and no one cares.
