Imagine for a minute that you have $15k budgeted for your next daily driver. You can pickup a new Nissan Versa, a three year old Honda Civic or a 10 year old BMW 3-series...but don't be an idiot. Buy this BMW 3.0CS instead.

The little know fact about driving a vintage BMW is that when you change lanes without signaling first, it isn't because you are a typical BMW asshat driver, its because the bloody blinkers don't work. Same goes for cutting people off, its probably because you just realized the wiring harness is on fire and you need to get off the freeway.. NOW .

The BMW E9 platform (known internally at BMW as the New Six CS) was a stunningly executed redesign of the BMW 2000CS platform to accommodate BMWs new range of big inline-6 engines. While the 2000CS has been accused of being a bit homely, the 2800CS/3.0CS/3.0CSi/3.0CSL that replaced it featured a comely shark nose that set the tone of BMW's styling for decades. Find this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! currently bidding for $13,000 in Howard Beach, NY on ebay with 1 day to go.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The E9 is a good looking car from any angle; its pointed nose is iconic and rear glass is achingly beautiful, but how is this one in DT price territory? First: it has a slushbox transmission and second: it's got some rust bubbles appearing...still...seems tempting. Rust is very common in BMWs from this era, but if the car isn't too far gone it can be fixed with new sheet metal and some work with a welder and angle grinder.

Kinja'd!!!

Under the hood is a 3.0 liter inline-6 good for 180 horsepower when fed via twin carburetors. Production of the "big six" M30 engines started in 1968 and continued all the way through 1994.

Kinja'd!!!

A peek inside reveals part of the reason for the low price, but if you just wanted a simple car to cruise around and don't care to row your own gears, this would make a great alternative to a domestic coupe.

Kinja'd!!!

The big question is - where will the bidding end on this one? Find a cheaper E9? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I had to research on this, I thought it was Paul Bracq, since he landed at BMW in '70, but it was as you say. Wilhelm did the E3 also, which I have had a few of and never knew, thinking it was Bracq

You will NEVER get rid of all the rust. If it's actually bubbling the paint, that means it's rusted from the inside out and there's a hell of a lot of rust you can't see yet. It's a nice looking car but, you'll never be able to stop the cancer. I'd avoid it for that reason.

I wouldn't buy a car to keep, north of Virginia.

I have long lusted after these, but finding a rust free example is nearly impossible. Often the rust is hidden, as well. The rust bubbles behind the front wheels is a VERY bad sign of a major problem. Check out this chart: http://www.e9coupe.com/buyers_guide/i…

Wonderful, wonderful cars, with great style & performance, and really robust mechanicals. This one's not the best example, and rust repair on the coupe bodies can be a nightmare because they trap water everywhere. Too bad about the automatic too, but as a GT car, it works. Overall they're valued low IMO, especially when compared to their contemporaries like the 911 & Pagoda SL.

Similar to newer BMWs, did these share (manual) transmissions with other models, perhaps even newer vehicles like the E21, or would a swap be possible with an E30/E28, etc. transmission down the road (which are very cheap and plentiful)?

I'd totally settle for a slushbox temporarily at that price point, if a manual swap (and sourcing the panels etc.) weren't too tough to do a little bit down the road.

Bubbling looks like rust in the front wheel wells. Fairly common , and as I understand a giant pain to remedy .

If you dig deeper you'll find people who say that Hoffmeister's design was extremely derivative of the 2000CS which was a Giugiaro design when he worked at Gruppo Bertone.

Some more info on the E9 coupe forum here .

The want is strong for this, but it is in NY (rust anyone?) and it is outside my price range. I am going to pick up a AW11 MR2 in showroom mint condition (56K miles!) for like $5500 and keep it that way. A buddy of mine is getting a slightly less crisp 89 MR2 for $3300 and restoring it.

Nice price. As stated, they all have rust problems - it's just a matter of degree. Assuming this isn't completely overrun by the tin worm, it looks like a good starting point for a great E9 resto project.

A shame it's an automatic. My father moved to a 2800CS from a Camaro SS in 1970 when the Camaro's brakes turned to mush avoiding a freeway pileup. The only car he liked more than the BMW is his 91 SE-R, which he still has.

$13k for an E9 is this nice of condition? A bargain. Sure, it's got an automatic, but it also has A/C, and seriously, would you rather sit in bumper to bumper traffic in a Nissan, Honda or Toyota, or this? Besides, it would be an easy swap to convert this to a manual if you really insisted on doing so.
