So, if anyone red my incredible long-winded and boring post yesterday labelled " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ", you'll know that I am: a) 14 and b) my family has an '05 Odyssey EX-L. The latter part of that information is what comes in handy today. You see, about six months ago after our family went on a 1200 mile road trip to Las Vegas/Death Valley and back, our van started to make a clattering or rattling noise underhood. At first my dad thought it was the engine mounts since the '05 Odyssey has the first-gen VCM with V-3-6 feature but when he took it in for a brake job they told him it was the valves. The price to get it fixed is about 300-500 but after doing a bit of poking around on the Honda J (?) engines, I found that this is a common problem around 80-120 thousand miles, and since our van has about 118, it should be expected. My questions to you however, are as follows:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Is the price above reasonable for this kind of work?

Do only Honda engines have this problem (cuz VTEC)?

Are there any long term effects if we keep driving it like this? (I keep telling him to get it fixed but he's putting it off until before our Mono Lake trip in September...)

Also, should the spark plugs be checked while the valves are adjusted? Are they even in the same area? and how vulnerable are spark plugs (not previously replaced)?

And finally, does anyone know whether or not we should worry about the transmission? I know that they're terribly unreliable on these vans but will it explode if we don't get it checked?

I know that's a lot of questions, but you don't have to answer them all, if you know one, then you can say one, thanks for all the help!

I had this issue in my tenth gen Thunderbird, and it seemed to be somewhat common in other Modular V8's after doing some research. Mine only did it a little in high rpm's. As far as pricing to fix goes, I can't help you. I had a friend help me fix mine.

Lots of questions...

Unlike many cars the Odyssey needs it's valves adjusted (many cars are non adjustable hydraulic valves), but it's not just a VTEC thing, it's rarer to see adjustable valves on cars-although they are commonplace on motorcycles and race engines.

Second thing, yes you might do damage if you drive it like this a long time. It may bend/damage the valves or worse, break a valve off into a cylinder and damage the piston. You will also get worse performance and gas mileage.

The plugs are on the way in to checking the valves and it's worth replacing them with OEM/High Quality plugs while you have the rest apart. for 20-30$ it is Much easier to do now than redo later. it's also a good time to replace valve cover gaskets, oil change, air and cabin filters. give it a good baseline going forward.

As far as the transmission goes...if you do want to be preventative you can flush/fill it with new fluid. but until it breaks for real there wont be a cost effective reason to worry about or do anything else to prevent issues.

Check the factory service schedule. If I remember correctly that model had a valve check/adjustment around 100k miles. It's usually around the same time as a timing belt change which also needs to be done if it hasn't. Plugs are also called for in that service.

Yeah, we did the timing belt at Wheelworks since the local Honda dealership turned into an Acura one, but nothing's been done about the valves...

Wow, thanks, now I can go to my dad armed with information...
