My guess is a 911 SC.

But I could be wrong.

It looks like an early 930-generation Porsche 911 or a '77 classic 911 2.7. Main focus points are the safety bumpers and the black window trim.

Well first of, it's a 2nd gen.(74-89) or a G-Series as they were all known as in the Porsche community.

It's a narrow body, which means it isn't a 930 Turbo. Just because it has a tea-tray or whale-tail doesn't make it a Turbo.

Color matched headlight covers means it's not a '74-77 car. So it must be an SC or 3.2 Carrera.

That's all I can tell you from the picture. Who's car is it? Could you ask them?

Thanks for the detailed info! I was looking through some family photos albums, I assume it belonged to my dad because my mom said she drove the Merc. Parents have been separated for a long time and I rarely speak to him.

Assuming it's a U.S. model with its original headlights, what year did US-market 911s ditch the sealed beams for H4s?

Other then him selling it to repay the debts (and eventually run from debt collectors), I have no idea. I've always been curious.

He doesn't sound like one who's wise with money from your description. Perhaps check out Pelican Parts and Rennlist forums to see if anyone knows about the car? All you've got is a picture, but it wouldn't hurt to try. :)

Not sure. I can identify cars based on certain physical attributes, but not on something as specific as that, sorry. :(

930 was a specific model (Turbo) not a generation. The 930 was also widebody this is a narrowbody
