For those of you who think lane departure reminders and rear-view cameras are weakening a species and making us dumber, don't click.
"The auto industry already recognizes we're human and our memories often fail us. You get a warning if you don't buckle your seatbelt, leave a car door open, your gas is low or you leave your headlights on," said Janette Fennell, founder and president of

in a statement. "If you forget your keys in the ignition, you get a warning. If a child is left behind, you absolutely need a warning. The federal government and automakers have the ability to solve this problem, and we need action now."

We petition the obama administration to:
Prevent Child Heat Stroke Deaths in Vehicles
In the last 20 years more than 670 children have died in hot vehicles.
As of July 15 this year 17 children had already died, reports KidsAndCars.org.
These unthinkable tragedies can be prevented.
We the People call on the Obama Administration to authorize the Department of Transportation to prevent children from dying in hot vehicles by doing the following:
Provide funding for research and development of innovative technology.
Identify, evaluate and test new technology to accelerate implementation of the most feasible and effective solutions.
Require installation of technology in all vehicles and/or child safety seats to prevent children from being left alone left alone in vehicles.
Anyone want to take a stab at how they might implement a warning that you have left your child in the car you are in?
While each and every one of these cases is tragic, is this a good idea or bad idea Oppo?

Considering most people freak out when they exit their vehicle and realize they forgot their phone, yet don't even think about their child they forgot in the back seat, the money would be going to the wrong places with this idea.

"Technology is Magic, and thus mandatory" sub-type of magical thinking detected.

No no no no no.
I have nothing against technology at all. I do have a thing against government involvement. Typical idiotic and emotional knee-jerk responses to bad things happening. These people never learn.

I can see this going both ways. It would be good because people who forget their kids in the car are typically running on autopilot and don't even think about what they're doing and a chime might draw them out of it. I used to commute 75 miles one way and if I even began a drive in the same direction as my commute I would find myself halfway there before I got to the thought "What the hell am I doing?"
On the other hand what about that time you get a rental car while yours is in the shop and there is no chime to remind you Timmy's in the backseat?

Better yet, let's just keep idiots from breeding.
Problem. Solved.

Going to say the same thing I say every time I hear about an "idiot forgets kid in car" situation.
STOP BEING IDIOTS.
I drive my son to and from daycare typically every day of the week, occasionally my wife will get him.
I have never even come close to this. Yes I'm tired a lot of days, but if your kid isn't at the top of your list, you're an idiot.

"Require installation of technology in all vehicles." All vehicles. No way in hell is my Trans Am getting a baby buzzer.

Agreed. Instead of being pestered to remember the kid in the back seat, be a responsible parent and remember there is a kid in the back seat in the first place.
Also, please do not think I was blanketing all parents with my comment, it was thinking about those who do leave their kids in the cars, a poor word choice on my part for not making that distinction.

no it's ok, Kinja re-directed me at you when I meant to target the article lol. As a responsible parent I took zero offense.
Some people are SO crazy about this though. OMG you left your kid in the car *WINDOW SMASH* without checking where the parent was, whether the car was running with AC on or not, whether it was even locked or not. These are just buzz things that get people going.

Why not make car seats plug into a port on the car, once plugged in they beep if they lose power from the port if they detect weight in the seat?
