Never really posted here before but seems like a good place to share some automotive photos I have taken These are from my latest shoot in Toronto at Downsview Park.

Kinja'd!!!

1st attempt at a rolling shot while knowing what I was doing, technique needs refinement though. My one buddy didn't clean his car so there isn't many shots of the BMW

Kinja'd!!!

Playing with my new low Fstop lens, my technique with it needs refinement as well but its my 1st time out with it, it struggles to get a solid shot with 2 cars.

Kinja'd!!!

The car is a Corolla GTS and not imported, but I gotta agree with the owner that the Trueno name is just better and as far as im concerned it doesn't do the car justice lumping it in with your standard Corolla

Kinja'd!!!

Was unsure if I should go with selective colouring or B&W for this photo. So I went with both.

Kinja'd!!!

The alternative.

Kinja'd!!!

Starting to realize the limitations of the lens and more focusing on 1 car.

Kinja'd!!!

Moving to a new location that was thankfully empty since there were a ton of cars around the area.

Kinja'd!!!

Lil bit of a surprize in under the hood of the Corolla in the form of a Honda F22c, plans are to give it a turbo down the line.

Kinja'd!!!

More playing around with the lens seeing the DoF/bokeh effect I could pull out of it.

Kinja'd!!!

Another one of the BMW I am looking forward to shooting with this car in the future with how it plays with the light.

Kinja'd!!!

Some more B&W/selective colouring.

Kinja'd!!!

JDM LHD Nissan Silvia, I am more of a Toyota guy, but certainly not a bad example of an S13 either.

Kinja'd!!!

I do wish I put my Toyota Bias aside and tried to get some more shots of the Silvia on its own.

Kinja'd!!!

Always liked the Silvia font

Kinja'd!!!

Always found Silvia headlights to be a very curious design.

Kinja'd!!!

A bit of a higher angle shot, not something I normally play with but there was a nice staircase that let me give it a try, will have to keep my eye out for chances like this in the future.

Kinja'd!!!

A great example of a "technique" I learned when shooting that involves getting the absolute most out of the positioning of a car, a location change and viewing at a different angle can REALLY alter up a photo even those the car hasn't moved from its location in the previous shot.

Kinja'd!!!

This 86 reflects light in ways I've never seen on a car I shot it picks up alot of blues and in a few cases (that were mostly edited out) some purples. This is the only photo where evidence of the purple remains though. (well along with the previous one)

Kinja'd!!!

A 3rd example where a physical change in camera location can offer up a very different picture, even though it was a fairly minor change, like before the car hasn't moved with exception of the hood.

Kinja'd!!!

Another shot from the staircase.

Kinja'd!!!

Back to my bread and butter super low angle photos.

Kinja'd!!!

This was taken simply by holding the camera as high up as I could manage while still being on the ground, it offered a shockingly nice angle of cars, definitely a method I will have to play with in the future.

Kinja'd!!!

More highlighting of the DoF/bokeh I was simply trying to get a nice picture that highlights the sticker for my buddies garage.

Kinja'd!!!

Another location move is a more hidden away area but still within Downsview.

Kinja'd!!!

Took alot of work to pull the lighting out in this photo but I think its worth it, but god that license plate editing was a nightmare, its still not perfect but an hour was more then enough time spent on the plate alone.

Kinja'd!!!

Love yellow lighting on cars.

Kinja'd!!!

Totally forgot about the 86s popups til my buddy mentioned it...mega durp on my part.

Kinja'd!!!

And to close it off an actually 100% fluke unintended photo that came out great (with the exception of my buddy recording who was to much of a pain to remove.)

Lastly a link to my personal flickr, thanks for looking. Hope whoever stumbles into this enjoys.

Why such tight crops on every shot? Back up a bit and include the whole car as well as some of the background in your composition. Also, ease up on the vignetting.

Alot of it was the lens really it was needed to get eh DoF going and aww I have always liked my vignetting :( But ya the lens was proving to bring up some issues for me.

What focal length is the lens?

35mm prime.

35mm is not all that long, even on a crop sensor camera. You're just standing way too close to your subjects. Getting used to a prime requires practice, and also a lot more creativity than a zoom lens since you obviously only have one focal length to work with. Keep shooting with it, but be conscious about how much of your subject is filling the frame. It's always better to capture more background than you'd like since you can always crop some of it out in post. Obviously you can't do the opposite, so it pays to take a few steps back (if you have the space to do so) when shooting with a prime.

Which 35mm? Canon 35mm f/2.0?

Ya of course the issue was I was struggling to get the DoF effect stepping back from the target, thats why I chose to stay close (I actually hate doing that.) My old lens REALLY struggled with any kinda bokeh so I wanted to experiment with that cause it was entirely new to me.

Were all of these images shot at f/1.8?

While minimum distance to the subject will obviously result in a the shallowest possible DoF and more pronounced bokeh, none of that stuff matters if the photo is overall poorly composed.

If the only thing you were after was shallow DoF and pronounced bokeh, I hate to say it but you should have chosen a lens longer than 35mm.

FWIW, I have a Sigma 30mm prime and love it, but I don't expect it to produce the same kind of subject isolation as a fast telephoto lens.

Unfortunately the lens choice was due to cost. couldnt get must else other then a 50mm full sensor format lens that lacked AF ..something my camera body lacks as well.

A good number of them are at 1.8 not all are with the 30mm some are using my older 18-105mm with a... f/3.5 (I think)

it was more used in the later photos that had 2 cars in shot, I think the 1st image to use it was the photo of the 86 from the staircase.

I do appreciate your helping by the way, I fully admit I am a self taught amatuer with much to learn. While I knew the 30mm would give me the DoF I wanted and always struggled to get from the 18-105 I am still learning how to get the DoF, going into this shoot I actually didnt know that I needed to be close to he target to get that effect. Looking back I can see how the higher zoom would help to get what I was looking for without being...a couple feet from the target.
