Tuning company/alchemist JD3 are currently offering a 50k conversion for a run-of-the-mill Excursion to this beast called RockZilla. Or they can make you one from scratch for $75k.
Powered by a Ford V10 and running some skonking 54" Michelins, it will apparently cruise at 75mph.
The kicker? You can roll into any Ford dealer for service, as it is still titled as one of the Blue Oval's vehicles.
Price is a bit ridiculous, but then so is the amount of want.

I think it looks more like a puma.

I don't even want to take it offroad, I just want to daily drive it.
(okay, I really want to take it offroad)

I dont think the price is the issue, have you seen top-end sand rails lately? I just think this thing is useless.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 02:34 |

I kind of want one, JUST so I can take it to a Ford dealer. Just imagine rolling up to the service department in this.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 02:42 |

It looks like they literally attached a cage to the frame threw 54's on it and called it a day. The suspension looks completely stock.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 02:55 |
|
yeah, all they are doing is destroying cool/rare excursions
![]() 07/14/2014 at 02:58 |

At least it's the V10 ones. I might have to do something about them destroying the Powerstrokes, even the 6.0.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 07:07 |

And this is street legal... An R32??? Nope nope nope, it does not satisfy regulations and all the so-called safety rules to be allowed to drive in the US... But that's ok lol
![]() 07/14/2014 at 12:10 |

So much cheaper to buy an Excursion off Craigslist to use!! I cant link since I'm on mobile, but I see them going for under $8000 all day by me!

is that some kinda goddamn mythological creature?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:24 |

Apparently you want ten inches of useless lift? This thing would be sweet in the rocks, low CG and plenty of travel.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:24 |
|
you could buy a welder and weld up a cage for much less than 50k. Then sell your old parts
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:24 |
|
It doesn't satisfy regulations to be sold as a new vehicle. But as a modified vehicle, it has all the necessary lights, and retains the original chassis and engine. So most states wouldn't do anything. Just make sure to get your excursion titled and registered before you do this.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:25 |
|
i might do this to my crown Vic when I replace it
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:25 |

On stock suspension, there wouldn't be enough articulation to be remotely useful. A ten inch lift is always useless, but taller coils and uprated shocks would do wonders.

on the other hand, this thing would make it easier to change the head gaskets on a 6.0.

I don't know, those rails are pretty close.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:35 |

Dunno if that is even possible but can I get mine with a Ford Excursion body?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:35 |

no, this would not be street legal in most states. no mudflaps or fenders covering the tires.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:37 |

When the ad says absolutely nothing about the suspension, it's probably not worth it.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:40 |

read that as "roll onto and Ford dealer" not into
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:40 |

It would be legal in a state that respects your freedums.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 14:42 |

Why would you use excursions and not old shortbed F250s like Home Depot rents out? I realize a rental truck is not a good base but there must be commercial fleets that turn these things over pretty regularly like police forces used to do with crown vics.
edit: because 4x4.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:00 |

I doubt those headlights are DOT approved, looks like there's no side markers, it's probably lifted too high to be registered as an Excursion in many states. I highly doubt this thing will be street legal. Not to mention the fact that you'd probably be better off with something built on a Wrangler chassis.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:24 |

This isn't 1999, it's been pretty well proven that you don't need an RTI score of 1000 to be a capable wheeler. Less travel and a pair of lockers wins every time.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:27 |
|
Why?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:29 |
|
I think he means that for the very little work they've done, $50k seems a bit too pricey. If it had a link suspension and coilovers it'd be a different story - not necessarily any taller - but would perform better.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:29 |
|
hey, i drive off road trucks also, but having fender covers is a nice thing when driving in the rain or dirt. having shit flung up at high speeds sucks.

To be honest I'd rather hike up the mountain.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:32 |

I think if you saw this on the road while out and about you'd think it was awesome.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:33 |
|
Yes, but you NEED more than factory suspension (with a few exceptions) to do this. It wouldn't take much for the stocks to fail turning 54" inch tires. And last I checked Rock Crawlers maxed at like 40's. 54's are good at bogging, that's about it, unless the vehicle around it is proportional in size. On top of not have enough articulation, it will be a PITA to try to fit in a trail and maneuver around it, due to the tires and lack of turn radius.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:35 |

Ziiiiing!!!
![]() 07/14/2014 at 15:45 |

Well, not so much the V10s. But I not so secretly lust after a diesel one. Something about the sheer ridiculousness of them.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:07 |

But where do I put my kids? That's why I bought the Excursion in the first place. j/k
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:21 |

My family was going to get a Powerstroke Excursion to replace an Astro Van that shitted out, but it wouldn't fit in our garage, and my dad didn't want to park a new SUV outside, so we ended up with an Expedition. I currently daily that Expedition, and love it, but wish it could have been the Excursion.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:41 |
|
By suspension do you mean axles? Because axles aren't suspension, suspension is what holds axles to the frame. A bigger tire is always going to be beneficial for passing over obstacles a smaller tire would drop into. Granted this is assuming you've built your axles to withstand the extra weight.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:50 |
|
Unless they replaced the axles and added lockers all they've done is set a time delay for grenade your drive train with those giant tires, and it won't crawl for shit. I guess if you wanna mall crawl then maybe
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:52 |
|
Regardless of whether or not it has some type of link setup and coilovers there is still a ton of fab work there. Any good shop is going to be charging at least $80 an hour for labor, plus materials. The tires alone are around $1,500, and that's for used ones. Don't get me wrong, pretty sure this thing is aimed more towards the bro crowd than the serious off road crowd but it still would be a capable machine.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 16:53 |

Does it baby?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:03 |

Suspension. But looking at it, those are stock axles.

Simple, live in a state that doesn't have inspections. Look at the price of this thing do you think average Joe is buying it?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:14 |
|
The fact that we have states without inspections is terrifying. I see the rusted out death traps that manage to barely pass and can't imagine sharing the road with worse.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:15 |
|
There are some here that are bad but judging by the internet it seems that states with inspections have worse because people go for the ones that are grandfathered in.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:20 |
|
What do you mean grandfathered?
Here there is no such concept. You fail inspection you fail. There is an upper limit on what they can make you spend to fix it each year, but no one really wants to spend money like that on a crappy car.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:22 |
|
By grandfathered I meant the states that have an age limit in what has to be inspected.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:29 |

The hell it's not street legal, I just took some photos of this thing going down the road yesterday .. let me see if i can figure out how to publish pictures.. got about 4-5 shots of it
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:29 |

I'd never take this thing off road. Too expensive to fix from the looks of it. Maybe we can park it next to Doug's Ferrari and pick up chicks.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:33 |
|
Considering how slow the 5.4 was and how rare the diesel is (commands quite a premium now, as you may know), you take what you can get. I sure as hell won't be sniffing a 5.4.
I'm biased though, because my mom had a V10 Limited and it was wonderful driving to Colorado from Texas and back about 14 years ago. We had a loner V8, and it sucked. Worked great in the previous Expedition. Everyone NOW wants the diesel.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 17:37 |
|
I remember when the Excursion premiered at the State Fair of Texas and they stressed that it would fit in most garages...in Texas. 2 to 2.5 garages are the norm here, but a garage considered big is kind of a luxury.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 19:13 |

I think that cars like these are not needed to comply because they're limited quantities and they're based off produced cars under FMVSS compliance. An R32 is a mass produced car under Japanese compliance. An R32 is total loss against most cars here because they're built "bigger to be safer".
![]() 07/14/2014 at 19:22 |
|
yep, works. Nice photos too.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:01 |

Depends where you live. Here in Illinois, no, it's not even slightly legal. The tires are 10 inches larger than the legal limit alone, and the "bumpers" look to be well above the height limit as well. Not to mention the complete lack of anything resembling a fender. Montana or something? Drive the kids to school in this thing all day long.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:04 |

Having a donor car helps with title. You can basically say it is a modified Ford, which helps greatly with registration & legal stuff.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:18 |

They may be, but that Dana 60 up front can be built to handle those tires and you'd never know it looking at the outside. Personally if I was going to be running tires that big I'd be running a pair of Rockwells.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:22 |
|
It may be, but from all of the other evidence, it probably is stock.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:24 |
|
Not always true, with clearance and articulation you can worm a small rig a lot of places a massive tire monster can't go.
A mostly stock TJ Rubicon on 33s with say metal cloak high lines, a tummy tuck, and no lift will go a lot more places than a TJ Rubicon on 35s with a 4" lift.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 20:53 |
|
Why not start with an F-250 instead of wasting an Excursion?
![]() 07/14/2014 at 21:04 |
|
Articulation is overrated. Less articulation is better than too much, assuming you have some decent lockers.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 21:08 |
|
All other evidence? You mean none? We know for sure it's re-geared because there's no way stock gears are going to pull those tires. It wouldn't be far fetched to assume there's some higher spline axle shafts and heavier duty U-joints in there.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 21:21 |
|
The carried over suspension points out that maybe it is just for the looks, not actual performance.
![]() 07/14/2014 at 21:35 |
|
Like I said before, the target audience for this is probably the bro crowd, I'm just trying to get across that the stock axles can be built to handle the tires, assuming it's a post '02 Excursion with a Dana 60 front.

I would love to see the birdshit welds from someone that has no idea what they're doing trying to build one of these.

![]() 07/14/2014 at 22:21 |

there is no such thing as grandfathered in. In the northeast the common trick is to register the car at a grandparents house in Florida. Then you pay Florida tax and don't have to have it inspected. In the past authorties paid little attention unless it was something valuable (as your're committing tax fraud), however when insurance companies realized all these kids were driving rusted out POS in New England they started clamping down.
A friend of mine had a 15 year old accord that when he traded it in was worth its weight in scrap. i would never ride in it because the frame looked like Swiss cheese.

I guess. Most community colleges have welding classes, and MIG is so easy anyone can learn. You could take classes, buy a welder, and screw up a chassis and still come out below 50k.

The 25 year rule wasn't written to protect drivers, pedestrians, or the environment, it was written to protect Mecedes Benz USA.
It doesn't make sense for a domestic kit car or custom to have anything to do with it, those domestic kit cars and customs aren't impinging on the sales of a US based distributorship.
