There is really only two ways you can scratch your paint with clay, first if you drop the clay on the ground and it picks up any dirt or small rocks and you don't roll them out of the clay. Second, would be if you just rub the clay onto the paint without any lubricant in between the clay and paint but that is almost impossible anyway because most name brand clays are soft enough that they won't scratch even if you do just rub it straight on the paint.
