"Illegal Machine" (illmac)
07/12/2014 at 22:54 • Filed to: ralph gilles, hellcat, srt, carlsile, chrysler, dodge, challenger | 55 | 100 |
A video posted on Youtube by Lance Miller ( co-owner of Carlisle Events) shows Ralph laying down a NASTY burnout at Carlisle, complete with the Hellcat exhaust note we've grown to love, and a lovely blower screaming under it.
One hand out the sunroof and one out the window, he gets out, grabs the mic and says, "I apologize. I forgot to turn the traction control off.".
This guy is absolutely my favorite personality in the Auto Industry. He's not just some clown in a suite he's a gear-head, a race car driver, a total enthusiast at heart.
The SRT Brand was folded back into Dodge, and it isn't clear what his role (if any) is with SRT products, but the Hellcat is one of his babies. So happy that he was able to get it into production. God knows how difficult it must have been.
Enjoy!

Seems like a lot of excitement over a little tire spinning. And what's with all the strutting around afterwards? Sorry but I don't like this guy. He's supposed to be some kind of design guru? I hate to break it to you fanboys, but he Hellcat is just a clone a 40 year old car.

I own two mustangs and a 1973 Gran Torino. This video is for me. But because where the pony car wars are shifting to handling as well as power (See Z/28 and BOSS 302 and GT500) The Hellcat better be able to turn or at least have a car in the Challenger lineup that can.

Good OLD America MUSCLE
Mustangs are pony cars - or use to be anyway. I'd argue the challenger is the closest to an old American muscle car than anything - based on a big family sedan, big, heavy, doesn't handle great, but loud and burnouts and big motor and yeah!
Cherry_man1
> Grim99CV
07/13/2014 at 01:25 | 4 |
then it will die off again. to compete in the new pony car wars you need to make a turn. You can't always have straight ling brutal speed. Trust me. I used to think it was all about straight line speed. Then BOSS 302 and Z/28 came along and changed the rules. If the Hellcat wants to fight the GT500 then let another Challenger fight the BOSS 302(or what ever is replacing it) and the Z/28. Because the Viper cant fight all the battles.

So was challenger. Thats what it was designed for was the Pony car wars. Here was the 1970's Trans AM fight night: BOSS 302, Z/28, R/T, 'Cuda AAR(?), AMC Javelin, etc.
Now Hellcat would fall in the category of 426 HEMI territory so it's rivals would be in 1970's GT500, ZL1 or Yenko, Chevelle SS454, etc. Still it is sad its not road racing against Z/28, BOSS 302, M3, and 911.

Midengined Cuda? No...
I'll agree they should make a T/A version of the Challenger, but the guys who buy them aren't overly concerned with handling and Chrysler doesn't seem overly concerned about it selling in Mustang/Camaro numbers, although 2013 was it's best year with 51,462 units moved. The Ford sold 77k Mustangs last year and Chevy sold 80k Camaros, so the Chally isn't too far off.

This car won't turn, probably won't brake that well, and won't work well on a track, especially against the cars you list.
This car isn't designed for that, like you say I think they should at least have a car in the lineup that can, but I think they'd need a new chassis because this one isn't designed with that in mind.
Dodge seems to be turning their company around the last few years with what I think are really good decisions, hopefully a low priced RWD sportscar are on the drawing board.

Loud noises, the smell, the sheer act of turning money into explosions and smoke?
The technical point of a burnout, as I'm sure you know, is to heat the tires up to make them stickier so you can get the best launch possible for the quarter. Also, it's fun to pretend you're a race car driver
