Hello Oppo,
I'm looking to buy an engine (sans car). Is there anything I should look for, things I should check or look out for when looking at a potential buy? Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure it starts. If it doesn't, make sure you can make it start.

What is it going in? Just looking for stock performance?

Make sure it can turn-over and has compression on all cylinders.

small displacement straight 8's arent easily found. Will you settle for an inline 6 or 4?

" Pseudo -Bugatti". I'm basically making a very large go-kart with bodywork modeled after the Type 35, with a 650-cc from a Polski Fiat 126p (pictured).
Pathetic, I know, but I want something to step up from when I stick a bike engine in.

Ok i understand now. Hopefully you can find a running car with one No bubbles of water in the oil points out a good head gasket. No shiny shimmer of bearing material in the oil. If valve cover or oilpan is off, you can check for bluing of the caps to see if it was ever run out of oil. Compression check is good but leakdown percentage is a better test if you can find a guage. Oily plugs arent a good sign.

OK, thanks for all the advice! I'll keep it all in mind when I go look at one.
