I know this is a lame choice but I would just do my research and try to guess which car would appreciate the most. Then I'd buy it and garage it and only drive it a few thousand miles a year. I wouldn't not drive it at all like a pure investment car. But I would limit the miles somewhat. Because 1.5M is a lot of money...

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > JR1
07/12/2014 at 18:04

Kinja'd!!!1

Hmm.

This is probably what I would do. I would spend the whole 1.5M on the best investment grade car. Keep it for 15-20 years. Then sell it and use the (potential) profits on more cars and to pay off a house.

Stable would go something like this:

458 Speciale

Ford GT

F430 Spider 6MT

997.2 GT3 or GT3 RS

599 6MT

Cayenne S

C7 Z06

993 Carrera S

How many of those cars I could get would depend on how much the first purchase appreciated and how much these cars appreciated. Of course there is a chance that I would want newer cars but I feel like I'll always love cars from the 90s-now the most because I started driving in the 90s and we usually like the cars from our youth the most. And I prefer N/A or supercharged engines over turbo charged. In 1o years I'll be in my mid 40s and almost everything will be turbo charged so cars from the 90s to now will be my classics. I'll be the crotchety old guy that doesn't like the new cars, lol

Assuming that it has to be off-the-shelf (instead of having mods up to the total of 1.5 mil) it would be something like this, totally restomod'd out with a numbers-matching 426 and horsepower in the 4 digits, as a daily driver, track and drag strip car.

I appreciate turbo charged and electric cars for what they are. I just don't need one myself. I live less than 5 miles from work. So MPGs aren't very important to me.

I could see myself having a turbo or electric car if I had to drive to more meetings or something like that. But right now I'm mostly at the office 5 days a week and don't have to drive around much for work.

Funny you bring up this topic now as just last night I was telling someone about how the price history of the Ferrari 250 GTO. Her mind was blown. Have you seen the history on it's Wikipedia page? Had my parents bought a GTO instead of their first house they would have been so loaded, haha. They weren't that expensive yet in 1980

There were roughly 70 F1s all connected to the legendary racing history. The P1 while excellent will not have the same kind of racing pedigree (unless of course they decide to race it.)

Something like a mercedes-benz 380 or 500k, Bugatti 57 ,old 6.5L Bentley, Duesenberg SJ, Alfa 8c, Delange D8, Cord 812, Lincoln K etc. I know they are not all worth the same but lets just say the remainder of the 1.5M after purchase is for servicing and restoration because Im not gona park it in a garage

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > JR1
07/12/2014 at 20:25

What sucks right now is that it's impossible to get a car at a good price.

Even if you do your research and feel pretty confident about your pick it will be hard to buy it for market value. Everyone already knows which cars are the most likely to appreciate. So the dealers and PPs that are selling them have factored future price inflation into the car's price. It's so frustrating! There is no point in buying a rare car as an investment if the seller has baked the next 5-10 years of appreciation into the list price.

It used to be that only car people bought cars. Now it's big business and investors are in on the game. So I don't think we'll ever have an opportunity to buy something that will see insane appreciation. The most we can hope to do is buy and hold a car that rises to 10 times what we paid for it in 20 years. Which is still cool. But we'll never see crazy 100 X or 1000 X appreciation.

I could see a car like the F1 have crazy high appreciation. But like you said we will never own one. Certain cars if you wait a few years and buy used can be a good deal. A boss 302, z/28, 427 corvette, etc. I think the key for super high inflation is a goo mix of rarity, pedigree, racing history, and of course good looks.

Oh I totally agree. I forgot to say that there still could be a small number of cars that might see insane appreciation, but we'll never make enough money to buy them. You didn't have to be a captain of industry to buy a 250 GTO in the 70s. It was expensive but even a middle class job would be enough if you worked hard and saved and put money into the car instead of a house.

I just did a quick Google search and found a Macca F1 that sold in 2012 for $5.5M! There is no amount of sacrificing we can do to afford a car like that.

There are a lot of cars we can buy and enjoy that will see some reasonable appreciation. The 427 Corvette would be a hoot! That motor is insane. I think most the air cooled 911s will continue to gain value over time as well.

not all of them were bad. The Turbo and GT3 were fine.

The rest had the IMS issue. I think 25% of the cars had it and the rest were fine. So it was luck of the draw. Either your engine was fine or it would fail.

Check out the TTAC series called "Porsche's Deadly Sins"

Very intriguing
