The tasty coating to inside ratio is just right, and the insides are just perfect.

I don't know about mailing Ms. Chicken. Usually I do an in-person handoff.

So many Subarus !

I was wondering, do you guys follow FIA regulations or something different (Rally America regulations I've heard of)? 'Cause I've seen you use the name class and group as the FIA, so theoratically you could use european rally cars?

Kinja'd!!! Dusty Ventures > BATC42
07/15/2014 at 03:36

Kinja'd!!!0

We use different regs from the FIA. There's basically three national classes and five regional classes (plus B-spec, which is basically stock low-output late model 2WD hatches. Pretty much nobody wants to run B-spec).

In the national division there's:
•Open: AWD cars, pretty much all engine/drivetrain/turbo modifications allowed so long as it falls within engine size limits (approx 5.2 if naturally aspirated, 2.8 if turbocharged/supercharged). Carbon fiber bumpers, fenders, rear doors allowed. Must race with an engine intake restrictor (34 mm IIRC)
•Super Production: Turbo AWD cars, stock engines and turbos only. No internal modifications allowed (with exception of switching to specific Rally America pistons in the Subaru, which don't provide any additional power but are allegedly more reliable). Stock dash must be retained, along with stock door trim, stock center console, etc. Same engine intake restriction as open class.
•2WD: All 2WD cars are allowed, so long as they fall within engine size limits (approx 5.2 if naturally aspirated, 2.8 if turbocharged/supercharged). Nearly any engine/drivetrain/turbo modification allowed, no engine restriction. These rules produce wild battles, like 160 horsepower R2 Fiestas going against 450 horsepower RWD Silvias.

In the regional division there's still the Open and Super Production classes, but 2WD is broken into two sub-groups (Group 2 and Group 5), and the Open Light class is added.
•Group 2: 2WD cars, engine limit of approx 2.8L naturally aspirated. No turbocharging or supercharging allowed. Engine/drivetrain modification open.
•Group 5: Basically the same rules as 2WD in the national division.
•Open Light: Naturally aspirated AWD cars. Engine size limited to 2.8L. Some engine/drivetrain modification allowed. This is a fairly new class, but has exploded in popularity as an "affordable" way for competitors to go AWD rallying (for all those people who don't think FWD rally hatchbacks are cool).

There are more details to the rules, of course, but that's basically it. No homologation rules or anything like the FIA has though, there's a lot more freedom in the build and the design of the cars (and what cars are allowed to run), so you can get some interesting variety. A lot of competitors who have come from Europe or Australia and run in the states say they like the potential for creativity and cars that can make big power. Not to mention the fact that someone could conceivably run a Group B car (with some safety updates and the intake restriction) or a current spec WRC car (or nearly any other AWD rally car that's competed anywhere in the world in the past 30 years) within the Rally America rules

Wow, thanks for the info! Simple regulations, not too many classes, and it smart to have different classes for 2WD and 4WD. Things are different witht he FIA regulations.

For exemple the car in which my father used to co-drive was a Renault 5 GT Turbo (the car still runs) competing in the Group N/class 4 (N4). It's turbocharged production car with no modifications to the engine or the drivetrain, and the engine has to have more than 2l of displacement. Thing is, as there is no rules on drivetrain layout, the small R5 GTT and it 150hp is competing against much more powerfull cars like Evos, Imprezas and some Ford Escort Cosworth putting out around 300hp. And AWD. This is just utterly stupid....

Kinja'd!!! Dusty Ventures > BATC42
07/15/2014 at 04:33

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, it's not completely perfect (that Renault 5, for example, would be in Group 5 despite it's low power, so it would be up against BMW M3s and turbo Fiestas), but overall it's a good system for keeping the field relatively level without breaking things down into a billion classes.
