My dream sleeper would be a base model 3 series with M3 internals. Engine, suspension, brakes, and the Manual transmission. Silver, with the stock wheels. Ultimate daily driver. The seats swapped with the m3 seats wrapped in sexy Alcantra.
To top this car off, I would want a rotating license plate, with dealer license plates and an identical car's license plate. This will likely cost around 32,000 for the car, much more for a donor engine and various things, and perhaps totaling 120,000.

woah $32k is a lot for an E90. I paid half that for my '07 E90 last August and it was a one owner car with a little over 50k on it.
Funnily enough, that car is a twin to mine except mine is dark grey and has the amber corners (North America).

I would just debadge a E90 M3 (pre-LED facelift)...it'd be a lot cheaper and wouldn't be a headache inducing swap.

I don't want the fender flares, the fender flares makes it easier to identify it as an M3. The chassis might not be as stiff but it does not require custom fabrication of the flares to match up with base 3 series.

Only car guys (like us) would probably notice the flares. I have to explain to most normal folks what makes my car special only to get a dissmissive response like "ohhhh that's nice". I even have a hard time telling the E92 coupes apart until I see a badge.
I would look at manual E39s, especially the 540. The E39 M5 is pretty subtle too.

What 3 Series would you be talking about? The early E90 above would be only around 12k. I would get a 2008 or later model.

I just got a new 328 for 40k but a 320 will set you back as you estimated, 32k.
