Damn, people. It's not hard to wash the salt off your car.

I guess I could've left mine like that, lol.

It's either that Mazda owners wash their cars a lot less than other car's owners, or that Mazdas are a lot more prone to rust.

I'll go with the latter

cool story bro : my sister had a 2002 protege, at one point the car refused to start during winter, turned out rust had formed on the starter body.

They asked her if she had her car washed under freezing weather, so she said yes, and then they tried to void her warranty for washing her car under cold weather.

As a former owner of a brand new 2003 p5 and a brand new 2006msp6 gt, which both had enormous reliability issues, I have a really bad perception of Mazda's quality control.

Yes they are fun to drive (when new) but they are the ladas of our time.

Interesting. The president of my car club has a 2004 Mazda6 with 301,000 miles on the original engine and clutch. And I have had my 2008 Mazda3 for five years and 50,000 miles and have yet to have an issue.

I knew winters were more harsh in Canada, but this is just ridiculous. I could count on one hand how many Mazdas I've seen here in Western New York that were as badly rusted as the ones you've pointed out.

I mean, that's really bad.

there's always someone like this, it's just not the norm.

Talk to J-body GM fans, they all have 3 billions miles on them without maintenance.

J bodies are still crap cars.

Die hard fans of any kind of of cars are the least people to trust, they see life trough their obsession-colored glasses.

Wouldn't say I'm obsessed. I've just had good luck with my Mazda and have seen several others do the same. In the other aspect, there are several folks that have had one or two bad experiences and see the rest of life with those awful experiences in the forefront of their minds.

the fun thing is that there's a lot of other older cars on the the pictures that aren't rusted at all.

In the less than 10 years old category, the ratio is 9 rusted mazdas for 1 rusted car from any other manufacturer.

That's pretty bad.

Kinja'd!!! Kate's Dirty Sister > mazda616

but dude, the only less than 10 years old cars I see with rust are Mazdas, it's not about maintenance anymore, of course you can save your Mazda with rust proofing and extra attention, but you don't have to do that with any other cars.

There's a problem there, and anybody trying to find excuses are in denial.

Mazda makes great drivers cars, but they have some serious quality issues to address.

Rust has been an issue of theirs, that is true. But, we can agree to disagree. You don't like Mazdas and I do (like them so well my wife got one as well). :-)

I've never seen any rusted that bad around here. And it's not like I live in SoCal or something. We get pretty harsh winters here with lots of salt on the roads. I think the worst I've seen is rusted rocker panels on a beaten-to-hell Protege.

Wow you had a P5 AND an MS6? Wow that's awesome!

You gotta remember, at the time Mazda was Ford, and pre-Mulally Ford at that. Strangely though, you don't see too many rusted-out Mk1 Foci.

I've never seen a rusted Mazda in my life... Keep in mind that I grew up in Tennessee where the closest thing to snow was a light dusting, on occasion.

Of course, I also own a Fiat Spider, so my opinion of rusted may be slightly skewed.

that wasn't that awesome.

The p5 deteriorated quite heavily in its first 3 years, the speed6 had all of its parts rplaced twice in its first 20 months, I drove a loaner cx-7 most of the time which was doing about 8mpg and was as boring as a crown vic.

A mazda won't rust in a place where an alfa won't rust, that's for sure.

Doesn't make Mazda better.

They make great cars, for climates where rust isn't an issue.

my parents owned a 626 (it had a coolant leak and no AC. They flinched when asked them to consider a Mazda to replace a matrix. They don't fondly remember the 626 for reliability. But the 626 curiously has no standard right mirror

My sister has a 2008 Mazda 3 with 70k on it. The clear coat on the whole back half of the car has completely peeled off. It looks like she has half the car wrapped in matte vinyl.

Focii rust out from underneath. Rear subframes on them practically fall the fuck off.

Kinja'd!!!

I've only seen a handful of 3's rust in this manner. I work at a Mazda dealer in the rust belt so I see A LOT of Mazdas every day.

I attribute those rare cases to maybe bodywork done improperly. Maybe?

Most 3's rust around the rear quarters. Had one in this week with 250k on it. Guy bought 60k tires and said he was gonna make it to 300k and get rid of it.

For some reason Protege quarter panels rust the worst. Mazda6's do too, but not nearly as bad. I have seen a few Proteges with rust on the bottom on the doors and front fender arches as well. But these were rode hard/put away wet. Cars that are taken care of and washed and garaged seem to fare better.

Then again look at the Tribute/Escape. Just had a recall for front suspension subframe rust. All the doors and tailgates and quarters rust on those. Built by Ford. Who's to blame?

Speaking of other brands, my '98 Camry had just a LITTLE rust bubble on the left rear fender opening. 218k on it. I work with two other people with similar vintage Camrys. One is a 2000 with 170k on it. LOTS of rust on the rear fenders/quarters. One is a '97 like mine, and its rust free.

Then there's late 90's early 2000's Hondas..... yeah.

Basically, its like Blue car syndrome. If you're looking for a particular car to rust, you'll find them. Focus on one brand and that's all you'll see.

(disclaimer: Wife and I own a 2008 CX-9 that had rust starting under the hood near the latch-catch. Had the hood replaced under warranty. Pinch welds underneath have surface rust, as do all the door hinge edges, oddly)

Was it ever repainted? I don't think I've ever seen a clear coat issue on a 3... or ANY Mazda and I've worked at a dealer for the past 10 years.

Why segregate? Post pictures of all the Hondas and Toyotas and Hyundais too.

There's a Mazda 6 and 5 and 3 and CX7 all of about 2006-2008 in the shop today and none have rust that I can see.

I ran a 2002 Protégé to 186,000 miles with no rust. Original paint job (black metallic) looked new when I sold it to buy a 2010 Mazda3 (white metallic) which I ran to 26,000 miles before selling to a neighbor to buy a 2014 Mazda 3.

I live in Florida so our vehicles do not see snow and I have never seen a rusted Mazda. I do see a lot of dark colored Honda's, Ford's and Nissan's with burned off paint especially on the roof and trunk. I have never seen a Mazda with burned off paint.

Can this be that the owner is not maintaining their vehicle? A coworker owns a Honda Accord that they have never washed and they park it under trees and outside at night. Their car looks like crap with mold growing on the quarter panels and they don't care.

lol

Must be a hot weather thing. I have a friend at Mazda dealer in AZ that says they replace dashboards almost daily under warranty because they warp in the hot sun there. Not quite an issue here in balmy WI.
