Let's just get this clear- this is speaking from my own experiences. I obviously can't speak for anybody else. Here's an M6.
I think that United Airlines should win the award for "Most Delayed or Cancelled Flights for No Good Reason." In the past three times I have flown with them, they have delayed or cancelled five flights that have really screwed up my plans. First, they delayed a flight because of a broken air conditioner when it wasn't even 75 degrees. That caused me to miss my connection, forcing me to fly into a different airport and drive four hours at 12:00 AM. On the way back, they delayed the first flight, then cancelled my connection flight, causing us to be rerouted to an airport three hours from home (instead of 20 minutes). My dad had to drive out and pick me up (at 12:00 again). Yesterday they delayed the first flight, which would have caused us to miss the connection. Strangely enough, there was no inclement weather at the destination or the departure area, nor was there any in between. We decided it would be best to fly straight to a different airport and take a different connecting flight to the destination. The connection got cancelled. We decided to drive three hours to the destination. Luckily we are flying Southwest back.
TL;DR- United Airlines delays a lot of flights. I also suddenly realized I sound like a whiny bitch. Oh well.

Delta also sucks, They delay, cancel and then try to make up for everything in between with food vouchers and that kind of shit.

shit, that sucks haha
To be honest though, all airlines are like that. It seems you've been served a good amount of shit by United, but it's not really significantly worse than other airliners. When you fly, there's always a risk that something like that will happen, there's just no avoiding it unfortunately...
Best of luck getting home though, maybe Southwest will treat you better, lol

Most of the horror stories I know of involve bags going missing. I am going pdx to ewr with a 4 hour layover then on to Heathrow

I agree, United is by far the worst airline I've experienced. A large majority of this is due to their hub being Chicago O'Hare which is constantly a pain. The last time I flew United from Madison to DC and back, I connected through O'Hare. Each time, my flight landed in one concourse, and the connecting flight was in a totally different concourse. Each flight into O'Hare was delayed in varying degrees, so I had to hoof it a good like 1/2 mile at least, and barely made my connections even though I was scheduled for ~1 hour layovers. Garbage.
Up until recently I would say that Southwest is my favorite airline, but the last time I flew them, they had changed their 737s from 5-across seating to 6-across, which makes for significantly smaller seats that no average sized adult human being can fit in comfortably. The only thing that made this tolerable was I was flying with my gf and we managed to get a row to ourselves and leave the middle seat open.
So now if I'm flying solo, I'm going to avoid Southwest like the plague because those seats were ridiculous.

I do ~150k miles a year and United is my main carrier. They're not perfect, but their network is convenient and I don't think there's anyone that flies as many places as often that's any better.

It's 75 at the terminal, but that's only a tiny subset of the flight. Flying at with any of the climate control systems out of order is a huge mistake. Poor maintenance on Delta's part, but they made the correct choice.
Strangely enough, there was no inclement weather at the destination or the departure area, nor was there any in between.
The system is far more interconnected than that. Not only do aircraft usually fly to three or more places a day, crews often fly in from all over the system. A pilot for the Cleveland-to-Atlanta flight may commute in from Seattle, while the plane first flies from Salt Lake City to Cleveland.
I'll take 911 RS for $5000

Well balls. I'm flying from IAD to Madison and back next week. Of course I'm going through Chicago.

My concourse-crossing adventure was from Madison to DCA, so maaaaaybe since you're doing IAD you'll get lucky and have your O'Hare gates in the same concourse. But yeah, be prepared to hoof it pretty good if your layover is 1:15 or less.

This. They obviously need climate control at cruising altitude. We're talking about -40° (F and C, same thing), where you could freeze to death if it didn't work.

I had a great experience with Delta a few days ago. Flight was almost empty and the air crew even told us that we could change to the empty middle row seats to sleep. (This was on an international flight). A few guys also asked to be moved to business class, and they were.

Wow, that's awesome. Especially since my next flight is on Delta... :-)

I flew both with a connection, the domestic portion was too short to actually have an opinion, but the good portion was the international.

That's what I did. It just wasn't a good experience, and JFK is a colossal shithole to be stuck at.

Should've connected via Atlanta, that airport is awesome, and it's so full of delta planes, they could probably just throw you in another.

I probably could have, ATl is a Delta hub so that would have definitely made it easier but it would have been longer and less direct. As we were coming from Virginia, to JFK to Gatwick instead of having to go further inland. They do have a great little historical/art display in Atlanta's airport which is always nice.
